Erie, Illinois pipeline explosion send flames in air

ERIE, Ill. (CBS) -- A fuel pipeline traveling underneath a western Illinois cornfield exploded, sending flames 300 feet into the sky and prompting dozens of evacuations.

Erie Assistant Fire Chief Scott Melton says the massive fire was reported around 11:15 p.m. Monday after residents heard a blast.

The towering flames could be seen for 20 miles, Melton told CBS News.

The pipeline was carrying a mixture of ethane and propane.

Anti-fracking groups are using underground explosions to destroy water supplies? I don't think they've thought this through.

In the Peace Region, ranging from Grande Prairie Alberta to Dawson Creek BC, they tried blowing up everything from well heads, to nitrogen trucks, to pipelines running alongside a populated town. Terrorism isn't usually 'well thought out'.

The radio informs me that today is the tenth anniversary of the Really Really Great Big Blackout, and interestingly enough I also stumbled across this old email response from CNN to my assertion that the breadth and scope of that blackout was indirectly, due to elapsed time, a result of home grown terrorism. ... and I guess... somewhat pertinent to the thread?

Of course all I got was some 'form reply':

Will Bush take a stand on insisting Canada deal more effectively with its own 'terrorists' to ensure reliable power supply to everyone?

That was a real nice form letter. I hear these days they say:

Dear Moron,

You're a moron, and your opinion would shame a dull six-year-old.

Piss off.

Yep. Freaks are freaks. Reason ain't a common trait.

Neither is protesting. You never know who or what you are protesting for rather than against.
I'm protesting an anti-beer group. Also an anti-Cheezie group.

I suppose the act of blowing up transmission towers is more sabotage than terrorism, but it's rather an implied threat of terrorism, that "if you keep building it, we'll keep blowing it up" kind of terrorism. Just as reprehensible, I think.

Back when I was stationed in West Berlin, we had a common response to the various demonstrations:

"The Germans are demonstrating again."

"Oh? What are they protesting?"

"Their inability to win a war."

Judging by the state of the economies I would say that Germany, like Japan won the war. All they lost was a few battles.

There are many who have made the same observation, but since they're looking for a discussion rather than a fight, they generally say Germany and Japan "won the peace."
