World Trade Center owners seek billions from airlines

NEW YORK – A federal judge began listening to testimony Monday that will help him decide whether the owners of the World Trade Center buildings destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks can pursue billions of dollars in damages from aviation companies linked to the hijacked planes.

U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein in Manhattan plans to announce his decision from the bench as soon as several witnesses conclude testifying in the trial expected to last about three days.

The buildings' owners, World Trade Center Properties, have already received nearly $5 billion in insurance proceeds.

Unlikely. There are scores of ways to toll a statute of limitations, and I can't imagine the lawyers involved here don't know all of them.

The fact that testimony is being taken generally means they've moved beyond the statute of limitations question.

More than likely the airlines would then go after Bin Laden. The stuff that comes from the airlines will probably will wind up being insurance money as well.

I imagine the theory will be that the airlines knew about the dangers of hijacking, and failed to do enough to prevent their planes from being taken over. In other words, negligence.

I presume you mean the Federal government, since TSA didn't exist at the time.

The government has sovereign immunity.

Ultimately the Feds are responsible for the safety and screening of passengers on behalf of the airlines.

Now all they (TSA) are good for is diddling kids, hotties and old people.
