I'm so tired if the bland and boring Canucks. Win or lose at least there will be some entertainment.

Tuned into 1040 for a bit this afternoon between Alta flood updates and heard the same thing - then I saw coverage on SportsCentre of Torts arriving at the airport. Haven't heard anything further. The guys on the Team were saying they were absolutely inundated with twitter and email comments on the possible hiring - hope Torts knows what he's in for there. Canuck fans are not known for their reticence.

I just saw that airport arrival shot, looks like they will announce soon. Yeah, definitely a different
pulse beat in vancouver now, but i'm sure gillis has had a long chat with torterella about the media
in vancouver, as in t.bay and even in new york, the hockey media coverage is very small compared to
vancouver, so he will have to do some pre season training, so he doesn't burst a blood vessel in
his first media question time.

Even if he does blow his lid its good for a laugh.

thats right, I don't really care how he trashes the media, i'm only interested in how
he coaches the team, the media usually deserves most of what they get.
They act so goody goody live when face to face with a coach or player, but as soon
as they get into their little booth with the microphone, or pen in hand to write
their column, out comes the daggers, and they do throw their mud.

So true, the media acts like this is all about them. They all get their chances to shoot their mouths off no matter who is coach.

Frankly I'd rather watch them lose with him blowing a gasket than watch the vanilla style we've been used to.

big move by canucks today.

cory schneider was dealt to new jersey, for jersey's first round pick, which was in 9th place.

I like what they did, as no one would take on luongo's lengthy contract, and now they don't have
to start next season with the two goalies still on the roster.

they acquired a good swedish goalie a couple of weeks ago, so they have 3 goalies, and can work
with that in the fall, at training camp. They might even acquire another goalie strictly as a
back up to luongo, and let the other two play in 'utica' for the ahl team, and move them up
and down as needed.

Ya, no other choice really. Cut bait and move on. Got a good prospect. Not sure why they made all that noise last year anyway.

20/20 hindsight is easy. I remember you and I agreeing, about a year ago that, if they couldn't find a taker for luongo,
then trade schneider.
The fact that the cap is dropping considerably has added to the problem, not just for canucks, but for
many teams, seems wacky, cause, the following year it will go back up again, and they will all have
gone thru this mess for what?

And, luongo was on the sh*t list with lots of fans, including many of us here, then over the past
year, he has made his way back into our hearts, and we all love him again.

the media is allready having a ball with this new move, saying the soap opera isn't nearly over yet,
I could almost see the saliva running out of the corner of their mouths with this new story to run
with.

Aquilini went to luongo's home in florida today, before the schneider trade, and explained the situation,
which I thought was a classy move, so that luongo wouldn't just here the trade without anyone contacting
him at all.

it will be good again, until luongo has a few bad games, then the hatred will start all over and we
will be running him out of town again.

I've decided i'm not going to go there again, it just isn't fair, he has put up with enough, and
now he has to get his head back into this team, become the 'man' again, and play his guts out, after
he resigned himself to the fact that he was finished, and schneider was the 'man'.

gillis, luongo and luongo's agent caused this with that stupid contract, just as luongo said,
"my contract sucks", well it does. money doesn't cure evrything.
I'm sure he would have torn up that contract and figured out a new one, but the league won't allow
such a thing, as it is a binding contract, a legal document, BUT why is it they can cancel the
'no trade' clause, which is also in that contract, but they are allowed to fool with it, take it
out, or change it a bit to suit both parties.

GO LUONGO GO.

Yes, and how do they renegotiate upwards for hold outs?

I always thought that at best they would allow someone to just take him and the contract for virtually nothing, yet even that appears to have dried up.

In the end they signed him to a long term deal to assure his security as a Canuck and that is still what they have. Tortorella is pretty defensive minded so it probably won't matter a lot who is in net, as long as he doesn't whiff everything.

There was talk of Edmonton offering a lot more for Schneider but I have a feeling Schneider wouldn't waive the no-trade to go there.

I don't think he had a no trade. He knew nothing of the trade till he saw it at the draft today, he said
that on the phone after the fact.
They can re negotiate any contract in the last year of the contract, which would
start a new contract the following season, but luongo's contract wouldn't get to
that point for years.
I just think gillis wanted schneider in the east where he doesn't have to play
against him all the time, makes sense.
If he was in edmonton, we would see him all the time, and if he played lights
out, gillis wouldn't hear the end of it.

I think you're right. I thought Edmonton has offered more but in reality looks like Gillis was asking more from Edmonton, probably due to the same division issue.

In the end Gillis did the right thing IMO. The draft pick they got was top four on some scouting lists. They need to develop a future leader for the team and this was a good first step. Success these days isn't so much a matter of who is in goal.

there are those today who are shouting for gillis to be fired for this move.

the three I mentioned who are responsible for luongo's contract are equally to blame, so they
should suck it up, and move on, and that includes all of those who think gillis should be
fired over this, I disagree.

he did do the right thing, and did it well. this player won't be an instant fix, he is too young,
but he is a good one, and will make his mark, that is all we ask.

they have a few others who are a bit older, and hopefully they will step up this fall, and who
knows, next week during free agent time, maybe gillis will add another player.

Looks like Luongo is already in mid-season form.

hopefully the rust is gone by the beginning of the season.

lots of players I have never heard of, many will be gone soon, some allready, yesterday.

some good looking prospects, and we haven't seen some players yet, schraeder for one.

looks like edmonton finally are going to show all that talent they have been collecting
over the past few years, I wonder who they will name captain, maybe taylor hall.

mason raymond has signed in toronto, for less than a million for one year, glad he is playing
somewhere.

What's the general opinion on the new Conference and Divisional break down?

Realignment
Effective this season, the NHL will operate under a new divisional alignment and scheduling matrix that ensures that all 30 teams play in all 30 arenas at least once a season. In creating more geographically-appropriate groupings, the NHL now has two eight-team divisions in the Eastern Conference and two seven-team divisions in the Western Conference:
WESTERN CONFERENCE EASTERN CONFERENCE Pacific Division Central Division Metropolitan Division Atlantic Division
Anaheim Chicago CarolinaBostonCalgaryColoradoColumbusBuffaloEdmontonDallasNew JerseyDetroitLos AngelesMinnesotaNY IslandersFloridaPhoenixNashvilleNY RangersMontrealSan JoseSt. LouisPhiladelphiaOttawaVancouverWinnipegPittsburghTampa BayWashingtonToronto

What's the formula for making the playoffs?

Copying and pasting isn't working worth a damn.

Pacific Division - Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose, Vancouver.
Central Division- Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, Winnipeg
Metropolitan Division- Carolina, Columbus, N.J. Devils, N.Y.I. N.Y.R., Pha., Pitts. Washington
Atlantic Division - Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida Montreal, Ottawa,Tampa Bay, Toronto

Did you hear any details about why Cory Schneider was traded? Don't want to spread any rumours! -:)

that happened way back in june during the entry draft where gillis traded him for a better position in
the draft.
the simple answer is that, over the last year every attempt that was made to trade luongo failed, as
his contract is far too 'long' to tempt anyone to take it on, so, with his back to the wall, gillis
traded schneider, and kept luongo which solved the 'cap' problems coming which would have hampered
him signing new players for this coming season.

I like the new division changes, saves many time changes on road trips, as schedules mostly run north
south, and they tried as well as possible to keep divisions in same time zones, which makes sense.

every team will have at least 'one' game with every other team in the league this season, which also
adds more interest for fans.

not sure of playoff rules at this point, i'm sure its written somewhere.

You never heard anything of a more personal nature re Schneider vs. Kesler?
