There has been a lot of 'local' chat as to why gillis wasn't fired. Well, obviously the aquilinis decided
they didn't want him fired, and it is their decision, they own the team, and it stops there. They are very aware of all
he has done, or not done, and they are very keen hockey people, so I respect their decision.
If gillis had been fired at this time, not sure what that would 'immediately' do to the look and play
of the team, as the new g.m. wouldn't be able to do any immediate changes of personnel, until he had
been there a while to decide just what he needed to do.
Also, this fall the cap falls 'back' about 9 million I think, or thereabouts, so
a new g.m.would have his hands tied, and could not spend 'any' money at all, and
also, this year only, the teams can do a 'buy out', which comes off of the cap,
so i'm sure the aquilinas and gillis have allready decided just what player/s,
they are going to buy out, so a new g.m. would have no say in that as well, and
also, they have to pay gillis for next season, he is still under contract, so
with not much being able to do because of lack of money, gillis might as well
stay, as he will be payed either way, and he and aquilinis can decide together,
just what players should stay or go, as they allready know them, and a new g.m.
would not.
The team 'can' immediately change with a new coaching staff, and we'll see in the fall just how that
looks, and i'm sure by this time next year, if the aquilinis take another look and don't like what
they see in gillis's performance, they will act then.
The move has been done, so I don't look back, I will look at this positively, and watch and wait and
look forward to a successful season this fall.
Its also interesting to follow all of the 'possibilities' as to 'who' will be the new head coach, haven't
got a clue who they might hire.
There is 'scott arneil' coaching the chicago wolves, who came back when his stint in columbus didn't work
out, not sure if they want to go that route.
I also have been hearing quite a bit about 'dallas eakins', who has been coaching the toronto marlies, and
he has been very successful, and has a good reputation.
