I don't know guys, from what's available, other than filming it and posting it online, how many of you guys can say you've never had a drunken romp?

Yep, but the gals were over 18, conscious, and co-operating. Everyone had smoked up or had a few drinks. No gal was out cold.

Drunk or stoned is not an excuse for anything.

There are times to talk about whether it is truly justice to attach a lifelong stigma to a minor.

When there is an actual minor victim who will always have to carry around the stigma of being a rape victim it is not one of those times.

This story has received a lot of coverage where I am (in SW Pennsylvania, in the Pittsburgh hinterlands) as Steubenville is just across the border in Ohio. A couple of the guys that work on my crew live there. I've heard a lot about it and although I felt a certain amount of sympathy for the boys (and especially their families) after going through a similar (although much milder) situation, my sympathy has abated as I hear more of the details.

The girl was passed out when these guys took advantage of her.

Some people want to say "hey! she was no angel, because she was drinking underage!" and they are right. But that doesn't mean her punishment should have been sexual abuse. In my younger, wilder/more stupid days, when we passed out we would get drawn on with felt markers, eyebrows shaved, etc. This served as a lesson in consequences which, although maddening at the time (when we sobered up) which was totally deserved. These boys crossed some pretty significant lines with their actions; they deserve their convictions. Do they deserve some leniency based on their ages? Perhaps so, but is that not what they received by being tried as juveniles and not adults? They are facing some time in juvenile detention, not a maximum security pen.

As to the death threats that "Jane Doe" has received, who in their right mind can condone this type of crap? She drank underage and was sexually assaulted. I'll say again she is no angel but nothing she has done is worthy of what is befalling her from the friends/family/supporters of the boys who resort to this.

Now there are allegations that these 2 boys have raped 2 other girls/young women. If the allegations are true, these boys aren't just stupid kids, they are exhibiting a dangerous pattern of behaviour towards women, that needs to be halted. As for the other allegations, that people who allegedly tried to cover up the incident, if they DID try to cover this up, then shame on them, and I hope they are punished as they deserve. I'm not sure about blaming the owners of the house where the party occurred: if they trusted their kids and the kids betrayed that trust, I don't see that they should be criminally responsible for what happened. I'll state outright that I don't like some of the BS drinking laws in the States, and think even Canadians are too uptight about things like drinking ages. I'm a believer that if we didn't make such a big deal about these things, we wouldn't have some of the backlash/rebellions associated with them. This one area where we can learn from the Europeans.

I agree. I drank more before I turned 18 than I likely did for 20 years after. We were drunk every weekend. Maybe the guys I hung with were just super special but NO ONE touched anyone after we were drinking unless they were a couple. And we all looked after each other. Frequently we had to work the next morning early shift at the hospital and most of us looked green. But NEVER would I not have trusted my male friends to totally and completely look out for me just as well as my girlfriends did.

Gerry I am with you on the drunk or stoned thing. In fact they should add additional
time to any one's sentence who claims they were drunk or stoned, like an additional
five years on each count that would end that defence. It is not a satisfactory defence.

Inebriation can and has impeded a defendants ability to form intent.

It has also led to a person committing an act. The video would show how inebriated they were would it not?

People have committed crimes while sleepwalking. Should they also be jailed?
