Praying versus acting

Geez, I haven't prayed 'for' anything since I was a kid. I sat in church one day and looked around at all the bent heads, the looks of concentration, and my mind tried to extrapolate that one small church, outward to all the churches across the world, heads bent, asking for things. And I stopped. I started saying thanks instead. Looking for thank you's I could send regardless of the situation. It offends some people, but boy, I'm glad my egotistic little mind (yes, I thought perhaps god needed little old me to lend him some balance) turned prayer around.

Yes:

God is just fine doing his thing and I do mine, I need nothing from the spiritual world in
that sense. I rarely if ever have time for quiet meditation, reflection yes, meditation no.
I was once a Catholic and now as a recovering one I tend to stay away from the whole
religious trip. I don't condemn others who find value in it. I have a great deal of respect
for people who have their faith and actually live according to what they believe.
I think there is likely a God but Him and I don't have a common bond, in the sense of
spirituality. praying is a total waste of time in my personal opinion, for others it is a form
of sustenance and that by individual choice is a good thing.

The Bible says a man can have NOTHING unless God gives it to him.

In other words, the supposed god exists in the world and is fully responsible for everything.

In your religion perhaps but not all of them.
For many there is also a difference between spirituality and organized religion.

do people who pray expect something in return?

I often think about the athlete who thanks god for letting him win the match, then I wonder
about all of the other athletes, and if they were waiting for god to let them win, how
was that decision made, does he go down the list and pick the one highest, or does he
close his eyes and point his finger to one of the names, or does he pick the one who
prayed and asked for the win.

I haven't prayed since I was a child, doesn't mean i'm not spiritual, even as an atheist, as
my spiriruality has nothing to do with any god, but is directed to life on this earth, meaning, family,
animals, trees, mountains, rivers, oceans, the sky, and the sun, everything I can see and be thankful for,
as I wouldn't be here without any of them.

I'm curious, why do you assume prayer has to be "for" something? I've always viewed prayer as a form of momentary reflection or quiet meditation. Whether it is directed inward or to some higher power just depends upon the beliefs of the individual.

ever watched the TV bible thumpers demanding that god do their bidding?
Always struck my a funny.

I especially like that Popoff guy with his prayer cloths and his holy water that
the holy spirit led them too and if you sprinkle it on what you're praying for and
pray hard enough God will grant you wish. No more popping the top of the
magic lantern and yelling Alibaba, and the Genie granting you three wishes.
Nope God will give you money and repair your soul at the same time.
The TV preachers are a real mixtures, threats of damnation, bully tactics to force
you to think like them. Prophecy of doom and disaster if you don't behave, and
what could happen worse than Santa not coming next year.
I always thought God was supposed to be this kind and loving father who would
forgive your sins and these guys make him out to be a monster.
Sure makes people want to join the love your neighbour club eh?

If God knows everything then why would I need to pray for anything?
I don't beg so I guess the prayer thing is not top of my agenda

You pray to remember. I have read you for a while now and think you a fine person so I know you will beg when you must . You already know those times when you would eat your pride before power forgetting any agenda you imagined you had. Such is the power of love, they say.

If Gawd is love, there are no bases to cover.
If there are no gods, there are no bases to cover.
weeeeeeeeeeeeell except the Christian God although is described as "loving" has a lot of conditions you have to meet or he seems to withdraw that love

That depends on the situation I don't know if "crossing ones fingers" counts as praying, but generally when I keep my fingers crossed things work out.
lmao... I am going to try that... actually, it's positive energy so I think it does have a positive affect.
