Who would thought this woman wouldn't hold up to public pressure and scrutiny?
Giustizia withdrew her demand earlier this week, citing the 'sensational' coverage her initial request received.
Really? It didn't have anything to do with the lack of scientific support?
Ya, if you're going to criticize the woman for not knowing about acorns, you have to criticize everybody involved. I'm more interested in the details that led up the the events depicted in the story.
Or feeding 'bullies' ideas.I would absolutely criticize a parent for not being educated about their child's allergy and what does, or does not, constitute a risk to said child. Especially if they are asking for drastic moves like cutting down trees, without having researched it. Especially if they are instilling unnecessary fears in school children.

In a letter submitted to city council on Tuesday, Donna Giustizia said she made a deputation before council with the full support of the St. Stephen School administration, but was formally withdrawing her request after her plea was blown out of proportion and she was made to appear as an overzealous parent acting alone rather than as chair of her school’s allergy awareness committee doing what was asked of her
Then, again with the support of the school, she said, she made the deputation before Vaughan council on Nov. 6th
“As I pointed out in my deputation, there are students in our school who have specific recommendations and/or letters stating that these students are not to come into contact with tree nuts of any kind,” she wrote. “I would think that the recommendation of a child’s attending physician…would have satisfied the City to act on the side of caution.”
It's nice to finally get some facts. It appears the woman is not quite the nutter (excuse the pun) that some here think. Perhaps they should do like me and wait for a more complete story before they start ridiculing.Allergists widely agree that a person with a nut allergy may have a reaction if they ate the meat of the bitter acorn, but rarely does anyone attempt to do so.

No she is a card carrying nutter.
I would criticize everybody for not making that the first question but getting back to my original comment, I still wonder whether there are bullying issues that are being unaddressed.
you're seizing at straws. Her agenda is anaphylaxis, she was discussing anaphylaxis. If there is bullying going on, petitioning to cut down trees isn't the route to take, petitioning to cut out ineffective administrators is.

Petitioning to cut out ineffective administrators is the first option. Cutting down trees is the easiest option
This is my main beef with the actions of this allergy awareness chairperson.
Her kids' doctors have told her to avoid contact with tree nuts. The assumption any physician would make is that a parent/child with an allergy would know they are allergic to the meat, not the presence of an acorn. That is NOT the same thing, as telling them they can die if they step on a freaking acorn. Allergy awareness is not only about educating the public of the dangers of allergies, it's also about educating your children about being smart and realistic about the world so they don't end up carted off to the hospital constantly from freaking panic attacks.
Lazy, ill informed, and pointless.... yes, easy describes it well.
I agree 100% accept, that isn't the job of the allergy awareness chairperson. That is the job of the parents. This woman had two responsibilities, one as a parent and one as an "allergy awareness chairperson". People jumped on her without really understanding the situation.
LOL...you've obviously never worked in government
Nope...Nope, if you're going to hang that label on anybody, do it on the school officials.
If the point of an allergy awareness chairperson isn't to assess whether there is really any allergy threat, then what is the point? They can't make it up as they go along.

They can't high jack schools and communities with this emotional of a topic, and expect people won't get frustrated and angry after years of trying to tailor a meal for a healthy child, around the dietary restrictions the school has put in place.
And those restrictions get put in place regardless of whether they really make the children safer or not.
Seriously, if your kid in kindergarten is allergic to eggs, my grade five student eating an egg salad sandwich should NOT put them in any harm. They do not share class rooms, they don't even share play grounds for crying out loud. But no. And frankly, if there is no child in my child's class who is allergic to peanut butter, what's the difference if they ate it for lunch, or they ate it at breakfast? None. The whole issue has become so embattled that rationality and practicality got tossed out the window somewhere.
What does she mean by attending physician? GP?She wasn't making it up as she went along whether you think so or not.
I thought the same thing, especially since you jumped on the possibility of maybe there could be some bullying involved.Yes, I can see this is an emotional topic for some people.
So she says.umm....no, they didn't get put in place because the woman reversed her direction after being attacked by "emotional" people.
That's exactly what Karrie and I did.If people here (including you) said, I disagree with this woman because....
Oh so true. Karrie and the rest of us that saw this for what it was have a long documented history of anti-nut allergy activism. That is evident in this thread. It's quite clear that it isn't necessarily the woman in the article that has an agenda.
She wasn't making it up as she went along whether you think so or not.
