City of Toronto Destroys Free City Garden on Public Property During Global Food Crisis :
This past Friday workers from the City of Toronto were ordered by City of Toronto Parks Director Richard Ubbens to remove all live plants and food from the People’s Peas Garden in Queens Park.
The garden was planted by Occupy Gardens and allies on May 1st with the intent of helping the community during difficult economic times.
However, because they didn’t ask the government for permission, the plants and food were taken to the dump and the garden was covered with sod. The garden was destroyed, without warning and without a chance to remove the rare heirloom plant species or harvest the food.

The garden was planted on May 1st....of this year. Does it really qualify as History?

Now it does.

BTW. Who just digs up a garden that's been there since May and throws it away. Didn't they know it was there til now? Not likely. They could have at least harvested the food and made a press release about how magnanimous they were to leave the garden this long and donate the food to Second Harvest or a shelter. Bureaucrats are dick heads sometimes.

With the cold weather coming, they could have at least used the vegetables from that garden to feed some needy people.

Not too many veggies in the ground Oct 1st in Ontario-have any of you people ever actually owned & worked a garden?

The weather has been pretty nice around here lately. And the article said there were vegetables that could have been used.

We've had a couple of other articles like this in the recent past ~ civil authorities do not appreciate these gardens as they attract rodents and roaches. As a gopher, this prejudice makes me mad but what can a poor rodent like me do???

* psssst .... put the goodies in wooden boxes and use chicken wire you schmoheads!

Northern owls are the best deterrents to rats. A mongoose can be trained to do the same though it should be sterilized in case it gets loose and becomes feral.

WE leave carrots and spuds in the ground all winter. Most are good. The few that are not go to the horses. Course our ground never gets harder than concrete either.

Mongeese fer all !!! Damn Straight!!! :blob:
----------------------------

My next door neighbour (call him Swifty), left his carrots in the ground one year, and covered them with a huge pile of horse manure to keep them from freezing. Killing two birds, etc. --- keeping and composting.

Come spring the carrots which remained were a sodden mess, and didn't smell too good either.............but they were nice and warm.

But he had fun working the manure and carrots into the ground with his tiller.

Same with his potatoes.

I couldn't make this up.

I've had a few but was smart enough to plant them on Vancouver Island where havest runs into November and we don't get 8' of snow on a mild winter day....:p
