NASA’s Climate Change Fear Monger James Hansen Says Summer Heat Waves And Droughts “Certainly Would Not Have Occurred” Without Global Warming…

Talk about a steaming hot load of BS.

Via Bloomberg News:

The Texas drought last year, the Russia heat wave in 2010 and other extreme weather “certainly would not have occurred” without global warming, according to a paper prepared by a top U.S. government climate scientist.

Abnormal weather episodes were so rare from 1951 to 1980 that the recent events can only be explained by the effects of the increasing accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, according to research to be published tomorrow. If carbon emissions continue unchecked, such events will become routine, with more extremes common within 50 years.

“We now know that the chances these extreme weather events would have happened naturally — without climate change — is negligible,” James Hansen, the top climate-change scientist at the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space
Administration and the main writer of the paper, said in a statement. “The natural changes in weather from day-to-day and year-to-year” don’t explain those events.

The paper by Hansen and two co-authors, to be published in the peer-reviewed Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was written before the recent record heat waves and drought across the U.S. Once that data is analyzed, it probably will show links to global warming as well, Hansen wrote in the Washington Post.

Hansen wrote the paper on extreme weather with Makiko Sato, also of NASA and the Columbia University’s Earth Institute, and Reto Ruedy, of Arlington, Virginia-based Trinnovim LLC, which provides support for U.S. agencies such as NASA.
They looked for examples of “weather anomalies,” defined as three standard deviations away from normal based on a statistical history. From 2006 to 2011, areas meeting the criteria covered about 4 percent to 13 percent of the Earth. Those types of extremes were basically nonexistent in the three decades prior to 1980, it said.

“Probably the most important change is the emergence of a new category of ‘extremely hot’ summers,” the researchers concluded.

Yeah, Weasel Zippers can sure debate the issue intelligently. . lol

A steaming hot load of BS...hmm I guess we can now look to weasel zippers for contemporary findings and evidence?

The probability of an event exceeding 3 standard deviations is such that we should only expect 13 such events in 10,000. Instead, the distribution is now skewed. From 2006 to 2011, the occurrence was variable between 4 and 13 events in 100. That's up to two orders of magnitude above what is expected.

BS? Says who, and with what evidence...oh I forgot, weasel zippers. Bloggers don't need evidence.

Hint: It isn't so much Bloomberg, Loc, it's Weasel Zipper's interpretation that's dodgy. Might as well look to Mad Magazine for an interpretation.

This may have escaped your notice, even though Les has mentioned it already, but it wasn't Bloomberg who called the story a load of BS. Why on earth would I want to contact a reporter or editor from Bloomberg about something they never printed? The Bloomberg report did a good job of explaining Hansen's research.

And those for whom no amount of evidence will ever be enough. Like Birthers, and Truthers.

You could try investigating for yourself, though it will probably take a little longer than cutting and pasting something from your favourite blog or aggregator.

Don't get mad at blogs and aggs Ton.

Besides, you know as well as most that it is virtually impossible to convince us that man-made ( and I don't care how many eggheaded, hipster, greenie, windfarm euphemisms the believers can come up with for that either ) global warming is any more true than the tooth fairy.

The globe gets warmer. Then it gets colder again. Always has and always will do.

No papers, institutes or 'properly vetted' accredited sources for (dis) information are gonna change that. It is what it is. Each (all) side are entitled to their own viewpoints.

Beyond that lays ulterior motives, partisan hackery and political vote-snatching sleight of hand in my opinion. I leave you to yours. Peace man. ;-)

Any other memes besides the mad thing? Or should I ask what Obama did to you? Steal your candy? Bang your girl?

Yes, well that is exactly what I just said.... hence the comparison to Birthers and Truthers.

Yeah, sure. But there's a reason that happens, some people just want to ignore findings and repeat these boring zero information talking points. Then some people are interested in the why and how. Besides which, your article is really about changing distributions. The cause of the warming isn't what changes the distribution of events, the warming is.

Yah, why are you so mad at Obama? In case it wasn't obvious enough, I was poking a bit of fun at your overuse of that meme. Responding to something doesn't mean someone is mad. Don't be so sensitive.

I expected more than an adolescent and offhanded personal jab at my girl friend Ton but now that that maturity yardstick has been established, I know where to file any further responses from you.

And treating serious responses with the "you mad" variety of response is supposed to make me feel like I should converse with you like an adult? It's no skin off my back how you want to take my posts, but don't whine when someone flips your juvenile meme back at you.

If you have nothing else to say about the BS from zipper weasels then I think we're about done here.

NASA’s James Hansen’s big cherry pick

A new statistical analysis by NASA scientists has found that Earth’s land areas have become much more likely to experience an extreme summer heat wave than they were in the middle of the 20th century. The research was published today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Earth’s Northern Hemisphere over the past 30 years has seen more “hot” (orange), “very hot” (red) and “extremely hot” (brown) summers, compared to a base period defined in this study from 1951 to 1980. This visualization shows how the area experiencing “extremely hot” summers grows from nearly nonexistent during the base period to cover 12 percent of land in the Northern Hemisphere by 2011. Watch for the 2010 heat waves in Texas, Oklahoma and Mexico, or the 2011 heat waves the Middle East, Western Asia and Eastern Europe. Credit: NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio

There are many issues with this presentation. It seems to be a big Cherry Picking exercise.

1. Note all of the missing southern hemisphere data. There are operating weather stations during his time, but they are excluded from the analysis. Why?

2. The period chosen, 1955-1999 leaves out the warmer 1930′s and the cooler 2000′s. Why?

3. The period from 2000-present has no statistically significant warming. Leaving that period out biases the presentation.

4. The period chosen exhibits significant postwar growth, urbanization is not considered.

5. As for severe weather, Hansen ignores the fact that neither tornadoes nor hurricanes have shown any increase recently. Only smaller tornadoes show an increase, due to reporting bias thanks to easily affordable and accessible technology. NOAA’s SPC reports that July 2012 seems to be at a record low for tornadoes.

6. My latest results in Watts et al 2012 suggest surface station data may be biased warmer over the last 30 years.

U.S. News and Greenpeace Collaborate on Global Warming

We have written here and here about the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature (BEST) project. The project’s goal was to carry out a comprehensive survey of recorded temperatures from as many locations around the world as possible, to develop the most accurate possible history of global temperatures from 1753 to 2011. It is still underway, but the group recently released a preliminary report, which finds that the Earth is somewhat warmer today than in 1753, and that average global temperature has increased 0.869 degree C since the 1950s.

This conclusion is something of a yawner, since pretty much everyone has long assumed that the Earth is warmer now than it was during the Little Ice Age, and that there has been some warming in the last century. There are obvious holes in the BEST analysis. Here are just a few of them:

1) The work done so far covers only land measurements, so more than half of the Earth’s surface area, the oceans, are not represented.

2) The BEST data tell us nothing new about the causes of temperature fluctuations. The report does not attempt to measure or to explain the warm temperatures during Roman times and the Medieval Warm Period, the colder temperatures during the Dark Ages and the Little Ice Age, and so on.

3) The report does not attempt to explain the fact that satellite measurements, which are taken in the atmosphere where global warming should be taking place, do not show the warming trend that appears in land measurements.
