'Greatest city' tops liveability survey

Sidewinder, Sarsaparilla, Stagecoach, (or strap-on depending on your flavor) Steve may be vindicated!

Calgary scored top points in a new Angus Reid survey for being a livable city, a place where people can find a good job and a metropolis that embraces innovation.

The release of the survey dovetails reaction to Harper's comment at the opening of the centennial celebration of the Stampede that Calgary is the "greatest city" in Canada.

"I think if the (Stampede) founders could be here today and see the great city, see what has built up around this event, they would be amazed," said the Calgary Southwest MP.

"They would be amazed to see that their Stampede has been part of giving birth to the greatest city in the greatest country in the world."

Mario Canseco, vice-president of Angus Reid, said the survey was being readied when Harper made the Calgary comment, which drew the ire of civic pride boosters in cities across Canada.

"He's a local MP. Of course he's going to say something nice about the city," said Canseco.

Residents in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver were polled in the new study, the full details of which will be revealed and discussed at a conference next week in Toronto.

Respondents were given a list of descriptions that best reflect their city. Calgary pulled ahead of the pack in six categories.

More Calgarians said the city is on the rise (90%), livable (89%), a place where you can find a good job (88%), a good city to start a business (75%), a city that embraces innovation (73%) and a city that is connected and has accessible digital infrastructure (71%).

The quality of life in all four major Canadian cities are good, but Calgary emerged as the best with 87%, followed by Vancouver at 82%.
Canseco said they expected Calgary to do well in the poll, but they didn't think it was going to be on top.

"We kind of had a feeling that the western cities would do better," he said. "But certainly we didn't expect Calgary to be the No. 1 choice on several of the issues."

The approval rating of Calgary's city council was also the highest among the four with 62% saying politicians are doing a "good job" and 6% saying they're doing a "very bad job."

Canseco gave Mayor Naheed Nenshi the credit for connecting with citizens better than his counterparts in the other cities.

While Calgarians praised the city, they also noted health care to be the most pressing issue.

Citizens in Vancouver are concerned about affordable housing, while people in Toronto and Montreal pinpointed traffic/transit and health care as the top issues, respectively.

The online survey was conducted July 9 -11 with participants of more than 400 citizens from each city.

After living in Calgary for 10 years and visiting it frequently before that, I have to admit there is a little bit to what Dexter says about Calgary's envy complex... but its envy of Edmonton more than anything. Calgary is like the little brother that always felt a need to grab people's attention and make them notice him, and would often slag his elder brother to do it. I never disliked Calgary but it always seemed many Calgarians were like some of the quasi-Canadian nationalists you see post here on threads that try and define themselves by making stupid comparisons to and supposedly at the expense of the US.

Having lived in both Edmonton and Calgary I will agree Calgary is easier to get across/through, thanks to the lay out of the various trails, but it is a nightmare to find anyplace in. I also think the "winters in Edmonton schtick" is overdone, mostly by Calgarians or Vancouverites (who wouldn't know seasons if they hit them with a shovel). I think the attitudes towards innovation and belief in the city are reflective of the populace: for the most part its a love it or hate it place, and no one stays where they hate being.

And as for Gretzky and the Oilers, I respected them but never liked them. Those who claim Sid the Kid is a whiner, never saw or forgot what it was like watching Gretzky: there was a reason why people made jokes about the Edmonton Whiners and Calgary Shames...

Actually Wulfie, having had lots of experience in Calgary and a little bit in Edmonton, I would say in some respects Calgary's winters are worse.................Edmonton's are 8 months where Calgary's can be 9, also Edmonton's weather is much more stable, if it's minus 40 in the morning it's going to be a cold day, whereas in Calgary if it's minus 40 in the morning, that doesn't necessarily mean a thing.

And the people who watched Gretzky do things that seemed almost physically impossible will never forget that either.

As for pure talent and puck feel, I don't think there will be another like him, I'm glad that Dave Semenko and others protected him so well.

Everybody has faults so it's only natural Gretzky might have a few, but Gretzky was about hockey and when it came to that he was flawless and he may well have had a good reason to whine a little. Nothing compared to Pavel Bure, and Pavel Bure had no skills compared to Gretzky.

He had class too, used to love watching him get the puck into enemy territory and then wait for a team mate to get close enough so he could pass it to them for the shot on goal.

He could put the puck where he wanted it when he wanted almost at will and often without even looking where he was passing and shooting. He often didn't even need a teammate to assist him in getting into scoring position as he made passes to himself off the boards.

at his peak he was amazing.

Yet he was terrified of flying, thats why he was in the jump seat in the cockpit the day I met him.
That's how he handled his fear I guess, meet it head on.I cant believe they let me,my buddy,my wife and her girlfriend in the cockpit to get his autograph, take some pics and chat for about 20 minutes with him.

I can understand that, my feet don't get more than two feet from the ground!
