46% of "households" don't pay according to the Tax Policy Center .

All Fed taxes != Fed income taxes.

Roberton Williams, senior fellow with the Tax Policy Center, said more than half of those who pay no federal income tax are still on the hook for payroll taxes, which are used mainly to fund Social Security and Medicare.

In addition, most people end up paying sales taxes as well as federal excise taxes on gasoline, alcohol and other products.

"Almost everyone is going to pay a tax somewhere along the way," he said.

Williams said that the percentage of people who will pay no income taxes this year actually is expected to be slightly lower than in the past two years, when tax credits designed to stimulate the economy allowed even more people to zero out their federal income tax bill.

We have to start dealing with the source of the problem, how much, what percentage, what kind is all irrelevent - what we have to do is radically reduce the number of drones, bureaucrats and parasites with their snouts in the trough- start with shortening the trough so if nothing else they are at least uncomfortable cramming in there.

Why do you think Warren Buffet wants to be taxed more?
He wants to pay another 1% income taxes to be equal with the top 4% at 29%ish?

What does the bottom 20% pay again? Nothing?

I asked you before, will you feel the same when when you break out of the tax credit gains range and start paying?

I phones, I pods, I pads...............a real epidemic sickness of the day, ya really got to f**kin' wonder, everyone screaming poverty while walking down the street in a trance with one of these gadgets mindless at their ear and not paying the slightest attention to their surroundings. Is that what peoples' enjoyment has been reduced to? Oops I forgot..............there's drugs too!

I believe that the "I" part is telling. Perhaps Micro$ is missing the boat and should create a "Me" phone.;-)

It is worth noting that Americans who are too poor to be asked to pay net federal income taxes are not a good target for those complaining that some aren’t paying their fair share. If there’s one group of Americans that is paying less and less as the median American family is asked to pay more, it’s the super-wealthy. As this chart from Wealth for the Common Good shows, the top 400 taxpayers — who have more wealth than half of all Americans combined — are paying lower taxes than they have in a generation, as their tax responsibilities have slowly collapsed since the New Deal era as working families have been asked to pay more and more:
Rather than taking aim at some of the poorest members of our society — 62 percent of whom have incomes under $20,000 — Americans should be asking how we can get the super-wealthy to pay tax rates closer to their modern historical average and how we can lift up the incomes of those who are too impoverished to be asked to pay federal income taxes.

Rather than simply repeating the Right Wing propaganda about taxes, it would behoove some of you to look at what is behind the tax numbers. It really does not matter what the relative numbers arse. It is not Greece where tax evasion is rife thrughout the society.

Taxes in the USA, if the costs of medical insurance are added are close to the Canadian level, I do not know the actual figures recently but, a few years ago total of all taxes in the US was 30% of National income: in Canada it was 36%.

The lower 50% of income and welfare recipients in the USA have lower incomes than the same group in Canada. Poverty rates in Canada are lower than in the USA. Child poverty in the USA is at 23%; in Canada, 13%.

Those numbers show why a significant proportion of the US population does not pay taxes. Where do they get the money to pay anything?

Comparing numbers between the two countries is pretty much a useless exercise. Unless everything is the same what's the point? Home heating costs in Florida vs. the Yukon!! Cost of groceries in N.Y.C. vs. Iqaluit!! Clothing costs in Phoenix vs. Yellowknife!! Must I carry on?
