A Possible Government Tax On Emails

I overheard two government tax workers discussing the tax on each email sent and received by citizens in this country and how the government will get the records of each Internet service provider to identify the customers that communicate with email to send them the bill.

Governments need more money so they can avoid the economic depression that is around the corner.

And if it is successful with emails then social media is next.

With the government holding the majority this will pass in Canada and other countries will follow with the implementation of this moneymaker.

This message has been circulating on the Internet for years but since it was government employees talking about it the government might be seriously considering it.

I hope they will not act on it but it is an untapped money stream for the government.

All BS, Liberlman.

So many ways to evade (encryption, VPN, proxy, Web Mail) something like that and not to mention the time needed to do something like that would be prohibitive to any revenue they might make from it. Also, e-mail service is not always located in Canada.. hence, a scheme like this would be moot.

Never doubt the taxman. The taxman would have found bin Laden within weeks of 9-11 if given the chance.

That’s true but most people would not do that especially if they know that would make them tax evaders that have heavy fines and jail terms when they are caught.

If they wanted to make money, they'd go after eBay accounts, garage sales and bedding plants with an aggression. I know of a reformed dope grower that makes more money off of bedding and house plants than he did with weed.

They've been going after ebay sellers for a couple of years now.

Considering you merely overheard part of a conversation which may have been totally hypothetical or tongue in cheek, let's assume that what you overheard is serious.

On what grounds would they tax emails?

If on the grounds that emails use electricity, then why not just tax electricity? If it's that telecommunications requires telecommunications satellites, would it not be more efficient to just tax internet providers or just leave it up to the private sector to put up satellites? Or is there some other rationale that I'm missing here?

Did you hear the rumor that CanadianContent will soon charge 3 cents per post and 5 cents for a new topic?

To what extent?

What information is the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) asking for?
The CRA has asked for the following information and documents for any person registered as having a Canadian address (including individual, corporation and joint venture) who qualified for the PowerSeller status under eBay's PowerSeller program in Canada at any time during the two calendar years 2004 and 2005:
  • account information - full name, user id, mailing address, billing address, telephone number, fax number and email address; and
  • merchandise sales information - gross annual sales

Best way to raise tax revenue? Tax all government departments according to the number of redundant employees they have. Even at a penny a day per head this would soon rake in billions.
