After walking back to the terminal in the pouring rain after the plane came to rest on the grass at the end of the runway, scAir Canada isn't on my "happy" list.

an old bush pilot I know that flew in Vietnam said any landing you walk away from is a good one.

Yes, this would be a "scam", and likely would be held to be outright fraud if you are caught.

Morally, only someone with no moral structure at all would even consider doing such a thing. That you have to ask says a LOT about YOU!

You aren't obligated to accept the credit limit you are given. If you want less for oh let's say security reasons or you don't trust you wife alone in a shoe store with your credit card.

Actually, I always try to err on the side of skepticism and prudency with these sorts of things.

That's why I asked.

It's so not a scam. Lol.

And I hardly think choosing a credit card based on the bonus offer and contemplating switching it up afterwards reflects any kind of moral bankruptcy.( It has at times led to actual bankruptcy of course, but that's a completely different issue). I'd say it's more along the lines of financial planning/budgeting than anything.

If there are any kinds of restrictions on cancellation you'll find them in the very small print. I'd recommend a really strong magnifying glass.

And just to add more to the mix, and because I have nothing better to do this morning except randomly google whilst enjoy my java, I found the following.

Choosing A Travel Rewards Credit Card

Wow, that's awesome.

Thanks SLM.

I've sent the grid off to my in-laws and we'll check out what our options are.

I'll keep you guys posted on how this turns out.

So I'll probably be going away mid next year to visit some family members overseas.

My in-laws suggested this idea where we sign up for a credit card (with an air plan) for the travel bonus points and then "downgrade" the card later. We would essentially be able to save around $400-$500 off of the airline ticket.

Is this a scam?

Do you think people can/should get away with this?

I'm a bit worried because it sounds kind of fishy, but I google'd around and can't find anything about it.

I'm thinking everything to do with air lines is a scam. Just put my son on Air West (Kelowna - Edmonton) cost him $309 one way including a $56 charge for overweight luggage...............what a bunch of hooligans! You can fly to Amsterdam for very little more!

Aeroplan has been around for about 30 years and is considered a reputeable company offering a legal bonus for applying for a Credit card from a registered Bank. It is not a scam-just a way to get you to use that Credit card. They are counting on you carrying a balance and paying their exorbitant rate of interest. You have no obligation to carry a balance, keep the card beyond one year, or even to use it beyond the obligatory one transaction.

There is about $600 in taxes and fees to get to Amsterdam on top of ticket price.

I misspoke there, I think the name of the outfit is West Jet............thieves at any rate!
Airlines in Canada are a sick joke. They make their bread and butter from cargo contracts rather than passengers but guess who subsidizes their contract bound cargo rates? Passengers.

First of all if it is with Air Canada don't bother. I travel to a lot of meetings over the course of
a year. I would rather visit the dentist every Tuesday than fly enough to take advantage of the
offer.

You're tired of the Air Canada Quiznos California wraps too? I remember when airlines used silverware and food was served hot on a plate and it was pretty damn good fare. What the hell happened?

Ah.. fair enough. I don't see you post that often, but never had a problem when you do which is a refreshing change from all us loons in here.
Admitting you have a problem is a great first step. Good for you. Now seek help for your loon problem. Then return when you are no longer a loon, for the rest of the usual suspects. You'll be a stellar role model for sure.

Get Durry or YukonJack in here and I'm sure the scale would blow a fuse.
How true, especially with the strain your presence alone, puts on it.
