We never had their oil, Europe did.The Shah was a brutal dictator put in place and supported by the US. When the people kicked his sorry ass out of the country, the pendulum swung the other way. People saw the Shah as a western puppet and and in a fit of zealous outrage rejected western culture and installed religious fanatics to replace the dictator. The swing was so radical that they ended up in almost the same predicament. The only reason the US has a hard on for Iran is they lost control of the oil.
When it comes to secular states being scary, the US tops my list.
Dr. Manhattan? What were we talking about again?
Wow, 25 posts shorter? I was reading what you didn't cut and thought it was pretty bad.![]()
Meanie!
Hey what's with the snot green anyway.
Is that supposed to scare us?
Why don't you use a more manly color like lavender or fuschia.

I would suggest that you read "Dog Years" Grass- 1963
Grass was honest enough to describe how he ended up in the SS, ( as a 1945 infantryman) & is very clear that his ethic heritage is Kasubian, but culturally that he is German.
If you find G Grass's work 'too complex'...... consider it the price of becoming educated.
Herr Grass's work is not "too complex"....
It is idiotic.
And I couldn't care less if he was an SS trooper or a Salvation Army trooper, or "Kasubian" or German, he is a literary train wreck....one of those "artists" that has somehow managed to con the gullible into believing they actually are producing something worthwhile.
Gunther Grass is the Jackson Pollock of the literary world.
Absolutely without merit.
Having subjected myself to The Tin Drum ALMOST to the end, I have no intention of shoving more literary bamboo splinters under the nails of my intellect by reading anything else he wrote....that's for sure.
Oh, and I have an education, Thank You
Actually, Colpy, I've always considered your intellect towering, but a little 'edge rough'. I never read The Tin Drum, but I have read Grass's other works.
That said, I would really recommend 'Dog Years'. which should have been his Nobel Prize work.
Grass's work 'delves deep' into Prussian Baltic myth and how it affects their lives and collective history. He's not an easy read. In Dog Years, he explains how he ended up in the SS infantry- along with his school mates.
And he is not anti Jewish. The hero of Dog yers, Ansell, is half Jewish.
So are all Christians, the Bible is by Jewish authors, Paul calls (converted) Gentiles 'children', so does the beloved disciple. Now where are those interest free loans and which way to the cottage-cheese salad bar?Ansell, is half Jewish.
You ALWAYS ruin all my fun. (pout)
