MONTREAL—Stephen Harper insists he has “delivered for Toronto” even though the Conservatives hold no seats there and he has rarely ventured into the city during this campaign.

Did anybody bother to check if Layton has a Canadian birth certificate? ^^

Why, what is your criteria in choosing a leader for Canada?

Unlike in the US Constitution, any Canadian citizen of legal age can run as your MP, and any MP can be chosen as PM, so country of birth is irrelevant within the Canadian political context.

I should say too that, regardless of economic platform, I'd rather a PM wiling to work with Parliament, one who is open to coalitions, as opposed to one who opposes working with parliament and is always playing a game of political brinkmanship.

That he be a man of charracter and tell me what he intends to do with my country, rather than spend his time attempting to slander opponents, while neglecting to tell me he has any plan whatsoever. Harper and Ignatieff's campaigns have been a real shame

Ya, this is the clown we need running the country.....

TORONTO - When NDP Leader Jack Layton left City Hall for greener federal pastures in the spring of 2003, I bid good riddance (to bad rubbish).
I figured he couldn’t do much damage being the head of a moribund third party. I could be eating my words on Monday night.
Not that Bicycle Jack, or the Patron Saint of the Environment or Just Jack the Smog Saviour — the names I gave him depending on what cause of the day he was pushing — ever made life dull.
Nevertheless I quickly learned that whenever he rolled up the sleeves of his buttoned-down shirts in some city committee or in council — his trademark gesture to show he was the Everyman — Layton was about to make some pronouncement that would jack up our taxes.
Whatever pet cause he was zealously promoting — the environment, the homeless or himself — money was no object to this relentless spender.
The Patron Saint of Many Causes had no problem, either, making a shameless spectacle of the very people he purported to be championing.
I will never forget that day in the fall of 1998 when — as 450 of his homeless friends and assorted poverty pimps packed the council chambers — he convinced councillors to declare homelessness a “national disaster” in Toronto along the lines of an ice storm or tsunami......

In the US you have to be born there as well as be 35 yeas old to be president I believe. (youngest JFK at.. 42/43?)

As far as economic platform goes, to get anywhere having to do with money you need to have a plan that most MP's like or you are screwed (Hence, we are in election)

Also, I think that a coalition right now would fail. There is too much bickering in Ottawa for this to work. I have seen cadidates in action and most of them just complain about Harper and I belive this is why we haven't really gotten far since the last election.

I will grant Layton that. Agree or disagree with him, even if he is ignorant of economics it seems, at least you can trust him. The fact that he's willing to work with others also suggests that he may be willing to learn and temper his ways. But again, I'm more likely to trust his intentions over Harper's any day.

Then vote for change vote NDP. I voted concervative in . Now am voting them out ! Democracy is having the ability to remove the person in power with the flick of a pen. Its one thing to overspend tax payers money but to be arragant about it and act like your gona win without even trying . Thats intorelable! Concervative need a lesson on Canadian intergrity.

You sir, are not someone I would bother to listen to about politics. You're endemic of what I've found so sickening about this election.... spending more time slandering the policies you don't like, than talking about the policies you do support.

Here here! Good point to raise. A lot of people just complain about the other guy and don't ever say what they think. They did this in Ottawa which is why there is an election in the first place.

I am 18 and I can clearly remember 4 elections. That is an issue in my mind.
I'm 40. I can't remember all the elections that have come and gone, I clearly remember opposition parties forcing an election, in an unprecedented, underhanded way, causing this election, which seems to have bent the minds of people I clearly remember having a far better grasp on reality, before this election.

I'm oh so tired of this election.

Yes, well you do have to be a Canadian citizen to vote or to hold office. There are many in Canada who are not canadian citizens, I think that was the point.

I don't agree with a coalition because it should be the people, thu their vote, that decide who has the best platform and how they want their country run. That's why ultimately they wind up selecting one party to do this job.

A coalition on the other hand, does not have the approval or mandate of the people of Canada to tell the coalition on how they want to be governed. Therefore it turns out to be almost like a communist government running the country with no approval of the people of Canada. They run the country like dictators in the end.

Okay, if you say so. You might want to read up on Parliamentary democracies and how they work, and as an added bonus, research our political history as far as parties goes.
