Japanese Americans: House hearings on radical Islam 'sinister'
By David Nakamura
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, March 9, 2011

During the chaotic days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Basim Elkarra was passing by an Islamic school in Sacramento when he did a double-take: The windows were covered with thousands of origami cranes - peace symbols that had been created and donated by Japanese Americans.

Amid the anger and suspicions being aimed at Muslims at that time, the show of support "was a powerful symbol that no one will ever forget," said Elkarra, a Muslim American community leader in California.

It was also the beginning of a bond between the two groups that has intensified as House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter T. King (R-N.Y.) prepares to launch a series of controversial hearings Thursday on radical Islam in the United States.

Spurred by memories of the World War II-era roundup and internment of 110,000 of their own people, Japanese Americans - especially those on the West Coast - have been among the most vocal and passionate supporters of embattled Muslims. They've rallied public support against hate crimes at mosques, signed on to legal briefs opposing the government's indefinite detention of Muslims, organized cross-cultural trips to the Manzanar internment camp memorial near the Sierra Nevada mountains in California, and held "Bridging Communities" workshops in Islamic schools and on college campuses.

Last week, Rep. Michael M. Honda (D-Calif.), who as a child spent several wartime years living behind barbed wire at Camp Amache in southeastern Colorado, denounced King's hearings as "something similarly sinister."

"Rep. King's intent seems clear: To cast suspicion upon all Muslim Americans and to stoke the fires of anti-Muslim prejudice and Islamophobia," Honda wrote in an op-ed published by the San Francisco Chronicle.

It was the memory of the camps that led the Japanese to reach out to their Muslim counterparts, said Kathy Masaoka, a high school teacher who co-chairs the Los Angeles chapter of Nikkei for Civil Rights and Redress.

"It dawned on us that this is really something that could escalate among Muslims, the same things our parents faced," she said. "They were being scapegoated."
...
"We just feel very strongly that it does kind of point back to the time when just because we were of Japanese ancestry, people looked upon us with hate and terror," Mori said. "This kind of hearing simply flames that kind of fire today."

What a short memory the nation seems to have. Do you think most of the children growing up in this generation fear their Japanese neighbours? Do you think they think of them as unAmerican? I doubt it.

This has to be the most ludicrous bit of stupidity on these threads.

What, we're not allowed to TALK about Islamist radicals in the west.....much less the role of Islam in western society? How fricken' stupid is THAT?

There IS radical Islam in the west, and it IS dangerous, and sticking your lefty head in the sand might aerate the land nicely, but it achieves little else.

You forget the bombing of Spanish trains, the bombing of British trains and buses, days of rioting in France, the torture-murder of a Jewish youth in France, the shootings at Fort Hood, the shootings just a few days ago of US airmen in Germany........as far as I know, every one of these outrages was perpetrated by individuals born and raised in the west.......

And those were the successful ones.

What about the radicalized Muslims caught here in Canada before an attack could be carried out? And it was not JUST the incompetent Toronto 18, but another group arrested last August........then there were the Brits arrested planning to bomb several planes, including Air Canada flights....

Meanwhile, crazed Jihadist imams preach openly about their hatred of the west....in London, and in Toronto, as well as the USA.

OF COURSE we should be looking at the radicalization of Muslim youth in the west........anything else is insanity.

OMG!

Liberals are exactly like lemmings, just not as cute!
(Ann Coulter) :)
Yea, but we have the "democratic right" to raid their houses, lol

OF COURSE we have no right to search without reasonable cause....I mean, it's not like they are a registered gun owner or anything.

Liberals are going to drive me screamingly crazy.

Where did ANYONE propose the removal of the rights of any citizen?????

Big surprise! The glory of December 7th, 1941 was one-upped on September 11th, 2001.

Those Japanese! They are always rapeing women, attacking people at night clubs, living entirely off social welfare, commit petty crime, throw a "youth revolt" every weekend and attack Christian institutions.

Ugh. If I were Japanese, I would be beyond annoyed to be compared with Muslim savages. But hey, I'm Ukrainian and trust me the Canadian Government has already made a million references comparing someone like me with an unemployed Somalian bushmen on a bogus refugee claim who commits knife crime in the suburbs of Toronto.

At least my ancestors were feeding the cities with grain. Somalians only produce crime and other "joys" of "diversity" - a diversity which Justin Trudeau will never embrace as he lives in an upper income community.

Northern Ontario,
Why should islamic radicals in the USA be worried of about any investigation.....
There are enough cool-aid drinking progressive liberals in the country to protect them, that they don't have to say a single thing in their own defence....

I doubt Islamic radicals are worried. It's exactly the kind of fight they're looking for. It's moderate Islam that is worried. The ones who really do want to just immigrate and be part of the country.

That's a good point. Islamic radicals do want this type of action.

More than half of the potential terrorist actions within the US have been quashed not by Homeland Security, FBI or CIA but from Muslims taking action and reporting the potential threats to these agencies.

I don't doubt that a bit......so were the Toronto 18 foiled by a Muslim......

The gentlemen that worked to aid western intelligence services are NOT the ones we are worried about, now are they?

Why would moderate Islam be worried? My friend is Turkish-Canadian, with an Anglo surname and is often mistaken for Metis, she wears makeup and designer jeans to the Mosque and she wants the ethnic enclave immigrants (Pakistani) out of Surrey.

She was the product of classical Canadian melting pot. An ideology we had in this country and was working fine until Trudeau's heterogenous "State Multiculturalism" that has ruined this country. I know East Indians who were born in Canada in the 1950's and they think our current situation is completely moronic and they're worried about their children being sucked into the ethnic ghetto.

If we really needed more people in Canada than we wouldn't be aborting 100,000 babies a year and the Government would be stepping in to make sure we can afford homes, healthcare and education for further children (it's called the Malthus Effect). Reason we adopted State Multiculturalism was that Trudeau was a moronic internationalist.

Just like the Dispensationalists and their radical beliefs and views they are kept in check by those with realistic Christian beleifs and desires for a peaceful planet and not one that ends in doom and gloom envisioned by a schizophrenic.

wow, that is so all over the map with different debates that I don't even know how to respond. Okay, let's narrow it down to what ACTUALLY is relevant to the debate at hand.

Why would moderate Islam be worried?

Why would moderate Muslims be worried about being lumped in with terrorist Jihadists? I recently saw, but can't find, video of a protest outside a mosque in the US. People screaming at men women and children as they tried to attend services, to take their terrorist asses home. The country is at a boiling point over Islam, and it won't just be the radical Muslims who get caught in the fall out. Fear, ignorance, and hatred, have the ability to scar everyone exposed, not just their target. The Japanese Americans are trying to point that out, but people have their ear muffs on apparently

And anyone who agrees with them (the Japanese) is apparently a 'liberal lemming'.

Funny how that works.

Of course you will. Google goes by popularity not reality.
The only time you will see that "Fact" as you wrote it on google is when the google spider makes his round on this forum and reports back, because you pulled it out of your head.....or maybe the other end:lol:
