Fox Insists Woman Made 'Anti-American Comments' in Emails

Jason Ditz,

December 28, 2010

Apparently no longer content to simply shill for a growing police state, Fox News decided to take what passes for the law these days into its own hands today, turning in a 46 year-old grandmother from Indianapolis, Indiana for having a “possible terrorist link.”

The entire case against the woman, one Kathie Smith, appears to have been based around data culled off of her Facebook page and the content of emails they exchanged with her. The Department of Homeland Security in Indiana confirmed that their first information about Mrs. Smith was when Fox News sent them a video in which she allegedly makes “anti-American comments.”

The case against Mrs. Smith is virtually entirely circumstantial, and is available, in all its grim details, on Fox News’ website. The report cites photographs of suspects in a German terror plot appearing in their home. Smith notes that her husband, a German Muslim, grew up with the men in question.

Indeed, Fox expresses outraged that Mrs. Smith flew “as recently as two weeks ago,” to Germany with her husband and demanded to know she was not on the “no-fly list” on the basis of her conversion to Islam and her criticism of US foreign policy.

Despite being an effort to portray Mrs. Smith as a thoroughly unseemly character, the article itself delves into serious kookiness later on, as the author complains that Mrs. Smith refused to “friend” her on Facebook and was discovered to have clicked “Like” on a profile for Anwar al-Awlaki, a US born cleric tapped for assassination by President Obama.

The “case” against Mrs. Smith however is not really the relevant factor here, so much as the fact that Fox News took it upon themselves to build a case against some random convert in Indianapolis and then “turned her in” to the feds.

The indications are that the feds were thoroughly unimpressed with the case against her, adding the video to some state-wide database called the “Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center” but apparently doing little else.

The effort against Smith closes with a chilling comment from the grandmother, who notes “I am exercising my right, as an American citizen to freedom of speech, religion, and the right to bare arms. I have the right in America to say what ever I want. That is what makes America so great, right?” The report then immediately segues into a comment from an unnamed “consultant” claiming that Smith’s comments are “classic signs of extremism.”

If you've done nothing wrong then you have nothing to fear from Fox News. [/heavy sarcasm tainted with incredulous disdain for the emerging police state in the US of A]

Northern Ontario,
It seems to me like Fox was also demeaned when the Acorn debacle first started and they turned out to be right..
So I'll reserve judgement until all the cards are dealt.
It also seems to me that any news organization that gets information on a possible crime to be commited has the obligation by law to report it to the police.....if they also get a story in the process...then why not?

I think making a video of you hugging guns would probably put you on a watch list no matter what you're wearing. Putting out proproganda like the are, yeah, they're on a watch list. Big whoop. They essentially asked to be. I have little sympathy for that side of things. She's getting her point across, and grabbing attention. Not one bit of it sounds like it's a surprise, let alone unwanted.

Yes indeed, Fox should just ignore any comments made, and wait until an actual terrorist action has been done, before notifying anyone.

Fox News did the responsible thing. If this woman, and her family, have done nothing wrong, then they have absolutely nothing to fear. If they have, it may well be that Fox News prevented another terrorist attack from murdering innocent people.

You all hate Fox News so much, when most of you have never actually seen it. You just go by whatever your left wing sources tell you it is all about. Having watched CNN, MSNBC and Fox, I can tell you that Fox is MUCH more balanced in its coverage than any other news source in the USA.

Thank you Mr McCarthy.
Personally I find all American news extremely biased and unbalanced. They all kneel to a master with the cash. BTW. I hate Fox first hand.

I can't stand watching editorial news, thus most American news sources are out. Plain and simple. Fox is first and foremost among them. That doesn't mean I can't separate my viewing habits from individual cases though. Not thinking they are horribly villainous in this case doesn't mean I like them, and I'm sure finding their actions vile wouldn't necessarily mean someone doesn't view them.

Modertor's note: Offering up other people's views and reactions before they are given is trolling, plain and simple, and will not be tolerated on the board as the constant habit that it has become.

Editorial news is great if you're in the choir. ;)

Especially editorial news on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, Washington Post, New York Times, Times Magazine, Newsweak, Atlanta Urinal Constipation, PBS, NPR or Los Angeles Times, just to mention a few. And even more especially if you are in the liberal choir.

Deflecting. Yes. I guess I missed Fox on your list. I'll go back and look but I think to be fair and balanced they should be included in that list.

Just as in East Germany, it is every citizen's duty to turn in any family members or neighbors suspected of doing anything against the government. FoxNews is simply doing its duty, as should you all. I'm thinking of reporting several members here, except there's no point, as Homeland Security runs most forums through their software anyway.

Mein Gott! White Terrorists in the United States! Thankfully, we were able to catch these blue-eyed terrorists and all it took was the God-loving and freedom respecting TSA, Homeland Security, CIA, FBI, et al.

I think in order to increase security and prevent more of these white terrorists we need to increase the perversion err I mean prevention with "deep patdowns" (cavity searches) at all our airports, schools, hospitals and shopping malls.

Furthermore, I think a fantastic idea would be to restrict air travel, because well you know those working class Serfs, err I mean terrorists, sure love flying around!

Because there is nothing more important in life to protect the freedoms of Americans!

Fox News can say anything to anyone as long as it's true can't they? Well except for government leaks.
