the funny thing about this news coverage is that we don't know anything at this point except for
the fact their is a suspicious package on a plane bound for the Excited States of America. We
don't even know if there is a problem. All I am hearing is commentators giving theories as to
what it might mean. We don't know where the package came from, who put it there, how long
it might have gone undetected, and was it left there or placed there.
I think authorities and news media do a great disservice, when they take something that could be
serious and speculate till hell won't have it only to find out that this was nothing more than a
tempest in a teapot.
Tell me something meaningful once it has been investigated.
My old news nose tells me this came heading into a weekend just before the mid term elections
isn't that interesting for speculation.

Well that is what the Dems and libs would have said if the shoe was on the other foot. I always thought that argument fell flat. I still do.

Northern Ontario,
Al Quaeda has been known to attack just before and just after elections in various countries and that could be why there is higher security at this time....

I THINK (and Grumpy can correct me if I am wrong) that Grumpy is saying that it is a ploy of the administration to distract the voters.

You mean like Clinton's attack on Iraq on the eve of his impeachement thingny?
Or worst...that Bush was behind 9/11 to have an excuse to attack the middle east for Oil?

That sounds like a conspiracy theory:lol:

Okay...let's run with it....;-)

Actually I said it in jest, just before that I pointed out that at the time we had no proof of anything.
As the afternoon progressed we have finally some a better class of speculation, and that is what
it still is. My view to news is yes be first if possible make sure you actually have a story before
you say anything. At this point even, the five W's are not covered here. Who, Where, Why,
What and When. All we have is speculation according to sources. That is all we get anymore
both by left, right and center news outlets. By the time we get to the meat of the story and there
is often not that much to it. Now its spread to warning Jewish groups, and synagogues, and aircraft
and how did they know all this in a matter of the last two or three hours?
It very well could be a genuine story with serious details, but outlets should have facts and not just
speculation before making a world wide presentation.
It is hard to take media seriously when they behave this way.

I could want to be a lot of things but being American is not one of them. I have a lot of American relatives.
There is some information of worth note coming out though. UPS is suspending operations to Yemen.
Two packages found contained explosives. Hmmm how did they get through security, when did these
items get discovered? You would think they would have been found before they got on the plane.
There are too many security people in a uniform with shiny buttons who don't have a clue as to what the
security business is all about. It keeps costs down, makes people feel secure, and the people with real
experience don't get paid what they are worth. If you can't raise the level of debate, raise the level of fear.
Spread it to the Jewish Community, the Airports and to other countries that might, (might become) a
target. The problem with me today is the level of credibility in the authorities.

Northern Ontario,
I don't think that Yemen has the level of outgoing security that ...let's say Israel has......

The americans were warned by other countries in transit that inspected the flight manifests and found it strange that someone in Yemen would be sending packages to Jews in the U.S.

This still ended up in a UPS cargo bag, wouldn't you think in a sensitive region the freight company would
have a higher quality of security? Just a question I don't know the answer.
The best security in the world is to make sure these packages, wacky passengers and so on don't get on
the plane. It could be said this is a success and failure at the same time. The packages made it on the
plane, the plane and the intended victims didn't get hurt.

there is no way in hell they want to capture Bin Laden. The Middle East conflict is still a money maker
over all. The ammunition factories in America, Canada and Israel are going round the clock. If we did
the end too soon, it would be costly for the economy. Remember Vietnam? It was cost effective for a
long time too, once everyone is tired of it, and there is no more rabbits to pull out of the hat to keep it
going, peace will come. Any bet this thing will last about 25 years before the end and peace finally comes.

You bet. Bin Laden is their biggest asset. They are not about to kill the goose that lays their golden egg.

The fact is if they got Bin Laden it would be the beginning of the end of the war, not the end of the war.
That is a long way from over, but when the leader, the symbol of the struggle is captured it tends to
deflate the enemy, the focus of the war would change from the wests point of view. The events of
south Vietnam tell us a lot. America took the peace with honor route, when in fact, the SV army had
collapsed and America could not hold on, with the serious troop withdrawals. Look at Iraq, once the
great Saddam was hanged the complexion of that war certainly changed. The end result. In the
final election, the people that America booted out of office, were the same people under a different
banner to be elected. The Suni side of the fence became preferred over the Shia movement.
It was the Suni Baath Party that ruled before and will again. Last Sunday one of the Retired US
Generals that operated in that theatre, as well as Vietnam stated what Iraq needs is a strong man.
Hopefully not one like Saddam but a strong man so much for democracy. Democracy will not work
in the Arab World, they are ruled by religion and the tribal system, not conducive to democracy,
When they catch Bin Laden its the beginning of the end

Bin Laden is just a figure head now, and his capture would help insure a democratic win only. We will not stop till his organization is destroyed this time, so do not worry Cliffy money will still be made world wide for a few more years.
