Re: Are Men Really That Much More Stupid Than Women? High-School Dropout Rates Say "Y

I think it could have something to do with the recent economic boom. Over the last few years, many healthy young males could get really good jobs in the construction industry ... no experience required. It's changed now, but there was a good stretch of time where youth interested in careers in the trades didn't need those last few high school courses to make a good income.

I've never been really convinced that the stuff they teach in schools tests intelligence. Some of the top academics I've met when they get out in real life don't know how to pound sand in a rat hole.

That's quite true. Academics sometimes don't know which end of the hammer to hold, and are notorious for shortening their fingers with power tools. On the same line of thinking, some of those academics can take tumours out of brains. Each according to their ability ... I suppose.

I really don't care what some "study" says. I call BS on it if it states that the education system has been "feminized" and that's the reason for the male drop outs. It's an "excuse". A "copout".

Education has not been feminized, but many programs have been established specifically to mentor females into professions. Engineering and law are two examples of professions that were male dominant for a long time, but now enrollment is closer to 50/50 male/female.

I think that females are also looking for more independent lives. For decades (until the pill generations), women were tied to the apron. With the pill, women started their independence ... basically deciding whether children would be part of their lives or not. Men, lost control of the size of their family. Next, women decided that they wanted equal pay for equal work. That still needs a little work, but it's getting there. Now, I think women are looking at things from an even more independent perspective. Not only do they want complete control over whether they have children, but also over their lifelong earning and retirement. Women have learned that men will not necessarily provide (50% divorce rates), and courts rule in favour of short term financial support (unlike 30+ years ago when a divorced woman had alimony for life). If a woman does not look after herself, chances are she'll be living at the poverty level as a senior ... and today's youth, especially females, are preparing to provide for themselves. I don't think the education system caused this change, I think it's a reflection of societal changes, and female youth wanting it all ... with or without men.

Now there is a truly senseable explanation, and speaks to the reality of life today for the individual
young female.
If I were a high school student again, I would do exactly what the above describes, just as men use to
do, and prepare myself, to take care of myself for life. If I decided to marry, I would make sure I
did not lose that independent ability to care for myself, working on a good marriage, while still
being an individual, and not dependent on anyone.

I don't think men are more stupid than women. Some people are more stupid than others.

The top 1000 things on a male high-school student’s mind.
1. Cleavage
2. Short skirts
3. His penis
4. Food
5. Fast cars
6. Video games
7. Sports
8. His abs
9. Part-time jobs
.
.
.
996. The subjunctive
997. The conservation of momentum
999. The fundamental theorem of algebra
1000. Canadian history
How can schools reverse this order?

What do you mean high school students? That list covers most of what I think about.

But what are the opportunities in the work force? Women tend to get preference as do minorities. Perhaps some guys would rather get a job and do Adult Ed when they get older. If your parents can't afford to put you through college or university, why be in a hurry to finish high school? Chances are, even if you had a degree, you end up flipping burgers anyway.

I haven't noticed that women get any preferences over men in the work force unless you are speaking of lower paying jobs. Can you provide some evidence to back up that theory?

The feminization of education encourages males to say Fuk it.

You are using a term I am unfamiliar with. What is the feminization fo education?

I've seen more cleavage this summer than in all my teen years put together. No wonder that is all boys (and men) ever think about, and I live in a small town.

I was probably thinking about government and community service type jobs. I was just throwing stuff out there to see if anything stuck.

I hate to write this but I will....

The education at the high school (and some college) levels has become feminized and has nothing to offer or stimulate the male mind into the possibility of useful information for a lifelong career whatever that may be.

Sexuality is on the male mind - AND the female mind - but when a male finds a calling for the potential of training in an occupation where he chooses to spend his time earning wages, very few distractions will replace the goals he finds to his liking.

One new modern variation I like however is that jobs are not necessarily gender specific any more and women are also finding new outlets for work as well - it's all good...but high schools got some "learnin" to do in resisting change.

Yes, high schools do, they are still operating atleast 40 years behind the times.

Mechanics, computers, cooking, sports, math, the sciences, language arts ... all courses that prepare males and females for futures in everything from automotives to athletics to engineering, accounting, marketing, medicine, author ... and more. There is nothing gender specific about the courses offered in high school, as these are the same courses that were offered nearly 100 years ago when only men were expected to have careers.

Yes, high schools do, they are still operating atleast 40 years behind the times.

The union needs to be turned upside down, all the dead wood needs to be cleared, and schools need to start fresh with everything from curriculum to management. Personally, I'd like to see all the suicide talk removed from the curriculum. My son has to analyze a poem about a teenage girl contemplating suicide ... it's so far from what is normally in his head, and I hardly think the school should be introducing thoughts about offing oneself. Maybe this female suicide talk is how the curriculum has been feminized ... but that sure doesn't contribute to furthering the goals of female students ... merely makes them dwell in their heads about all that could be wrong.

Ariadne I think hit the nail on the head with regards to the gender disparity.... when I was in highschool, there were plenty of guys whose summer jobs paid almost as well as their dad's jobs, and the temptation to just stay at work instead of go back to school was high. Women, at that time (12'ish years ago), were not as likely to land those summer jobs or want that kind of labour. So there wasn't as much tempting them to stay out of school. Those guys also knew that they'd be able to take correspondence down the road in a much more targeted, less 'filler added' manner, to get their equivalency diploma.

Guys figuring that they would be better off working than staying in school is nothing new. Today though, you even need grade 12 to get into the trades.

Males and females are indeed sharing similar jobs in the workplace and this is a great advancement - but I was thinking primarily of the roles in life for either sex.

Males have to think long-term, responsibility, raising family (or not), where women whether they will admit it or not always have that termination factor involved in marriage, raising a family, etc.

I know this sounds out dated but we are still wired that way unless homosexuality has become an issue and it is difficult to shake what nature keeps reminding us.....and males differ from women in that regard - whether they are performing the same occupations or not.

I hope the sexual differences continue in our world, I would hate to see "uni-clones" of indeterminable male/female creatures when I think the two sexual orientations are absolutely beautiful and complementary.
They also make fantastic parents in that they approach parenthood from different concepts.

Both are possible - "stupider" or "more stupid", but "more stupid" is often preferred. See, e.g.:

Other examples of two-syllable adjectives taking "-er" or "more", etc.:
clever, common, cruel, gentle, narrow, pleasant, polite, quiet, simple, tired

Men and women have a different intelligence. My wife is much better at some things than I will ever be. By
the same token, I have my share of things that I do better. We tend to share duties according to our respective talents.
My wife handles houshold money matters and I am reponsible for anything pertaining to our cars. I've always dealt
with various contractors who worked on home repairs. Somehow I ended up doing most of the cooking while Jan does
the baking.
We've been married for 44 years now so our arrangement must be working.

Having to drop out of school has absolutely nothing to do with stupidity. Only a cretin would suggest that it does.

I am a classic example. I was forced to drop out of High School, against my inclination and will. My mother was a single parent, a raving alcoholic, and she forced me to go to work full time to help support her drinking.

I got her to sign papers, when she was drunk, to get me into the Army. I spent 10 years on active duty, then used the GI Bill and part-time work to get my Bachelors Degree in 3 years, two masters degrees in 2 more years, and 10 years later I earned my Ed.D.

I have a measured IQ of 142 (done when I was 16 by the way), and I am a member of Mensa. You can hardly class me among the "stupid", but I still do not have a High School Diploma.

The two things are entirely different. Intelligence has nothing to do with the myriad reasons why people may have to drop out of school.

My sincere congratulations - the adversity of your early years must have driven home some tough decisions for you but because you had few choices, you pursued your dreams and won. So few people have that challenge and win....you did and I admire what you have accomplished.

I was unable to enter a Canadian university and moved to California where the entrance is less stringent but the choices are huge - I also found a full time job (where they spoiled me and allowed me time to do school work during working hours)...I felt I had gone to heaven. I haven't a stargazer IQ such as you sport, and work for me was difficult at first - translating into different teaching modalities in the U.S., but after I while I just could not stop and decided to get to the end of the terminus of a long trip.....After one false start I finally found where I belonged in the world and now benefit greatly from work I love and prosper from.

With pride of accomplishment I made it and your post gave me a reflection I always enjoy reviewing. The secret code is finding what you love to do and enjoying the
pursuit of learning as much as possible how to make it a lifetime of enjoyable work
(or fun).
Thank you.

Grade 12 isn't really good enough for a Polytechnic or technical school anymore either. Although there are minimum requirements (like high school diploma), there are usually so many applicants for limited spots that grades become very important. Students with senior matriculation fill the spots first, then students with a high school diploma are looked at and grades are assessed. There is a lot of competition to get into all post secondary schools, so those that do not complete high school have to learn on the job, or hope to be accepted years later as mature students.

Piecework is fine in theory, but have you noticed that it is women who are most likely to be employed in piecework at far below the national average even though the jobs that they do require a degree of skill that most men could not match?
