I'd go so far as to say that organized religion IS a problem because it is usually evangelical, which means spreading the word of your brand of belief to convert the unbelievers. Now this doesn't apply always and to everyone but you can look even at modern Christianity and how it still lobbies from the pulpit on social issues, especially those surrounding homosexuality and reproductive rights (never mind the Islamic states that operate under Sharia). I also tend to differentiate between religion and personal belief, because although they are sides to the same coin, one is more personal and one is institutional.

I know some people will object to this thought but I believe organized religion is by its very nature politcal, it can't help but be that way because you have a group of people and need a power structure... and someone will always want to be that leader and have things interpreted according to their values and understanding.

You're right when you say organized (denominational) religion.

Anyone is well within their right to burn a quran. Is it wrong... I think so.

The funny part is that they are burning the US Flag left and right while screaming...

"Don't burn the Quran!"

lol. Hypocrites.

I myself have a real issue with the bible thumpers who come door to door and try to preach.

I remember a couple years ago, I was outside doing a car clean before my camping trip and I had a couple of men in suits come walking by and they stopped me and made me read some BS and then they asked me these questions, I can't exactly remember them 100% so forgive me.

something about if I have sinned? if this is a sin if that's a sin blah blah.

they were trying to show me that what I haven't been doing, .. or in other cases what I HAVE been doing was a sin.

Shove it up your ass! I have my own beliefs and how I follow the God.

I don't like being told what I am doing or not doing is against God's word!

I have my own beliefs.. don't get me wrong here, I don't necessarily go to church like I did and there are things I don't do with religion but that DOES NOT mean that i don't have my own sense of morals and what is right and wrong!

I don't need some two bit sharps dressed loons coming up to my door and trying to show me a way! when the way is to see how long it'll take for them to push that book out their rear end after I shove it up there!!

leave me be and let me do it the way I feel most comfortable with it.

heck I don't even answer the door when these guys come to it.. and that odd time the phone rings and it's these people, I hang up so fast!

to be honest, I'd let my dogs loose if I could.

Religion is a cult perpetrated by those who will exploit people who need some sort of crutch because they require something or someone to tell them how to be righteous in the face of death.

It's a sad fairy tale for the weak minded.

The problem is not religion per se, but you have tyrannical, overbearing, obnoxious, holier than thou people who want to impose their will on people, so use religion as the venue for doing so.

well I guess one could say about many things, eg. it's not politics that is the problem, it is the
tyrannical, overbearing, obnoxious holier than thou people who want to impose their will on people.
But, when talking about politics we all know what that leads to, same with religion, every institution has
a name, and that name represents the people in it.

Yes... judgement, threats of violence, and flat out declarations of hatred reflect quite poorly on people. Perhaps some might want to read through the thread and give that some thought.

While I agree with most of what you said.......

I would have to add that I also have a problem with the new religion that says that you are an idiot, weak minded and, at the very least uninformed if you beleive in a God........It's called "atheism"...in my book they are just as bad as jehova witnesses or people who preach whatever religion they beleive in. in forums............

I hear you, Talloola, I was thinking more of people I knew in my parent's and grandparent's generation who were very religious but kept it to themselves, mainly just read their Bible, didn't push any advice on anyone or try to sign them up for something- just minded their own business.

really do i need this type of crap attuide i don't drink i have a disablity and you just prove to me your can't stand my thoughts and opioion cause it can't be written so damn fing perfect. you just made my point even more of accusing and assuming crap without knowing the full effects of me.

ROFLMFAO..... so, you use your "disability" as a crutch and an excuse for your ignorant and rude behaviour I see.

First off, just because you SAY you have a disability doesn't make it so. Second, just because you have a disability doesn't excuse you for your ignorance.

and you really want to think of it.

chirstians don't like gays

Let me make this perfectly clear. I am a Christian. I am a Roman Catholic. I also support GLBT rights as do many other Christians. I fully support SS marriage, as do many other Christians. I would venture to say that there are just as many homophobes among the "non Christian" population as there are among the Christian population.

The only people that joined the KKK were ignorant bigots and racists. Yes, they used Christianity as a "cover" and an "excuse" for their actions but that sure as hell doesn't translate out to Christians joined the KKK and that Christians are racist.

i have heard many of americans complain about there rights... yet when it comes to someone else right... they ingore it as they think muslims are the ones who attack us.

Strange, you blame Christians for homophobia and the KKK yet you don't blame Muslims for 9/11.......LOL, and then in the next breath you blame them for 9/11. I suppose you'll use your "disability" as an excuse for your inconsistency's.

zealotry is the true issue.

definitely.

I'm not the one that believes in something along the lines of Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny...you are.

If you need that crutch that's fine but it is what it is.

Critter, this disability of yours does not make you immune from flack when YOU post offensive things here.

You were capable enough to join this forum, you are capable enough to form an opinion. You signed on and said what you wanted to say about this so don't go whinning about it when people come after you.

I'll tell you straight up. The crap you posted was ignorant.

People can believe whatever they want, as long as they recognize that they can't legitimately force their views on those who disagree with them. But give them secular authority and that's what they'll try to do, so they can't have it. I think Hitchens is right that power corrupts religion uniquely, because it believes itself to be absolutely right in some sense and thus has both a right and a duty to interfere in the lives of those who don't buy it, and I also think he's right that any sect elevated to a position of power over others would soon start to behave like the mediaeval Catholic Church. So religion can't be given any secular authority, it poisons both the faith itself and the secular world.

The problem is that I've seen the zealous atheists who fall into the category of being outside the secular world, wanting to dictate how others live, what they can believe, etc. This makes it a very difficult topic to discuss in any environment because you get the fringes yanking away on all the people who land in a sensible middle.

I have to say, Critter's opening rant did NOT come across as 'believe what you like'. It came across very hateful, judgemental, and as just as much an attack on the religious of this forum, as the crap that eanassir posts is an attack on secular of the forum.
