BP offered to pay for all the damages the spill caused long before Obama did anything.

So, apology or no apology, if Obama takes credit for scoring the $20 billion, it is a SHAKEDOWN.

Who cares?

As long as the folks hurt by this get their money and hopefully get on with their lives.

To bad no amount of money will undo the damage to marine life there.

No shakedown, Obama made his mistakes and is trying to look like he is doing something, but we all see thru him, as for, BP, it will pay with its corporate life for this spill.

I watched the hearings. Reminded me of grade school where the bullies ganged up on the victim and robbed him of his lunch money.

Nothing is more disgusting than a person in power abusing that power. I am sure that future encyclopedias will have the face of Waxman as an illustration of the word 'ABUSE".

Remember that someone who is a shareholder of BP cannot claim innocence; as a shareholder, you are a part owner, you vote for the board, you reap rewards from the profits, and you are partly responsible for the behaviour of the corporation that you are a part owner of.

"From those hearings I learned one doesn't have to know or recall anything to be a BP executive."

Or a phony, grandstanding non-productive drone of a Congressman.

Agreed ... yet the congressman wasn't the one who was supposed to be in charge of his oil company ... nor was he the guy a few days later, taking part on a yacht race because "he wants his life back".

Indeed that is what many Republicans think. Limbaugh today took Republican leadership to task for condemning Barton (for coming to the support of BP).

This may be a ready made issue for Democrats in the November election. If they can tie Republican Party to BP, to big business, they will have a very good, very effective talking point.

"Still waiting for proof that BP offered to compensate all the victims for their negligence."

and waiting ...

As always, forum Republicans make up a claim and fail to back it up with any proof. No surprise, again.

BP is a private corporation and as such its first aim (rightly) is to make a buck, make profit. That is why left to itself, BP wouldn't have done much, done only the legally minimum required (in spite of what Republicans claim).

Obama was quite right to put pressure on BP about the trust fund. But all the Republican whining about the shakedown tells me one thing. If USA had a Republican president, it is highly unlikely he would have pressured BP to set up a trust fund. He would have taken his cue from Limbaugh and left it pretty much up to the discretion of BP as to what they wanted to do.

CNN just made a presentation about BP scheming to low ball claimants who are seeking compensation for their losses. One guy proved he made $162,000 in income last year in his fishing business. BP only offered him $30,000 as compensation for his losses. That is less than 1/5th of his income. So where is the proof that BP is the good guy who is seeking to compensate claimants like the forum Republicans are saying?

Still waiting for their imaginary "proof".
