I have been for many years wanting to discover more and more about my family's history and their past. What did they do before they immigrated to Canada? who came and who stayed behind?

Officially my family is from Prussia and they left for Canada in 1904 if I remember correctly.

There were 4 of them when they came and 1 died on the boat and never made it to Shore. They lived in Humboldt Saskatchewan and my Grandfather born in 1905 decided to first live in Regina before settling for good in Saskatoon.

My Grandmother was born into a Meninite? (is that right?) lifestyle but when she got married to my GF she became a Catholic, which her family did not like and well, they disowned her. she was born in 1913 in Saskatoon.

They had 9 Children, 5 boys and 4 girls.

My grandfather died in 1990, while my Grandmother passed away in 2007.

I know less about the other side.

My Mother's side came from the US (don't know before that) and German heritage.

There were quite a few that lived in the Saskatchewan area, originally from Eston, Sask. My mother's parents lived in Biggar Sask. Not sure exactly when my Grandparents from my mother's side were born.

They had 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls. My grandfather worked on the Rail for most of his life. He even owned a convenience store in the town of Biggar. it's actually still named after him.

He died a few months after having a Heart attack in 1978, about a month or so after I was born so I never knew him. My Grandmother died in 2007.. 9 months after my other Grandmother..

My Parents met in Saskatoon about 4 years before they were married.. so 1969-70. They lived all over for the first while, moving to Alberta in 1971. they settled in a City outside of Edmonton in 1977 (Spruce Grove) and we have lived there since.

in the 105 years since Immigrating to Canada there have been 9 Children, and 33 Grand and Great Grandchildren with 2 Great Great Grandchildren.

I do need to do some more research into the other side, see when they came over and bought land, etc.

SO anyone else?

You its funny I just signed out to spend some time @ ancestry. but the server is running to slow right so I'm back. That said, my wife had some arms length relatives move to Humbolt in the late 19th & early 20th century , a fairly large family, at least three daugthers who were domestics in Winnipeg before they joined the family in Humbolt at least 2 sons went to WW1 & 1 moved to N Ont

Here are some sites for you to search. My husband (former Albertan) sent these to me to send to you. Latter Day Saints site is one of the best and do a lot of research via census.

My Mom's family, I know very little about beyond Irish/English....

My Dad's Family I know much more about. Scot's that moved to England
at the invitation of the Royal Family, and then to Australia (involuntarily)
due to their interactions with the Royal Family; then to South Africa as
a way to get out of Australia, and then to Canada as a reward for
going to South Africa (told could emigrate anywhere in the
Commonwealth except England, and if he kept his mouth
shut, he'd also get a pension for life). Here I am.
A Canadian.

My Mum's family? One grandfather was from Newfoundland - but his ancestors came there in the 16 hundreds from England - but before that they were Huguenots from France. Her grandmother? Mining family from England - but by the surnames, they were Welsh. My father's father was British - Welsh in origin but judging by the number of red heads in my family, a lot of vikings made themselves known to my family. His mother was from the east coast of England and was - from the name - Scandinavian in origin, but her father was probably Jewish - rumour says both Ashkenazi and Sephardic, apparently. Oh - my Mum's father? we always thought he was Welsh, but further research has discovered Arab roots, by way of Trieste - when it was part of the Ottoman Empire.
In other words, I'm a a mutt.

I spent a couple of years researching my family on the computer, 'soo' interesting. I learned more about
them, and also sent away for some certificates of birth, marriage etc.

I also went to the church of the latter day saints here in courtenay, as they have a huge library for
genealogy research, and they are most helpful.

I paid a research firm in dublin to look up info for me, and send certificates, they were great, but can't
do that too much, becomes expensive.

I also learned to trust a few researchers on line, who reach out to help, 'just' to help, and do lots of
research for you, and we talked back and forth many times, and they did give me some very helpful bits of
info about my research.

I joined ancestry.com, and searched and searched. Most times I found nothing, must be very patient and
learn to be a detective and 'dig' deeper, and find clues.

My dad was born in dublin ireland, and his parents as well, and my mother was born in london, eng, and her
parents also.

My wife is something like the 11th Great Grandchild to some King of something. She has all the documentation. From my side I know my moms side came to Canada from Austria in 1906 and settled in Manitoba. My dads side, not so sure. I know he was born and raised in Sudbury area, but that's as much as I know.

My Dad was born in Washington, his Dad in Ireland - County Cork, My Dad's Mom was born in Ontario, her Dad from Ireland
My Mom was born here in BC, her Dad in Ontario, her Mom here in BC
For many of you - if you are looking for family, quite often you can just google the main family names and believe it or not - you may well come up with your family.
