The government announced that they were not going to do anything with the National Anthem.

Really? Then you must not live in Canada, you probably live in Saudi Arabia. In Canada, gender neutral language is the norm almost everywhere, in politics, in schools, in the press, on television, in the universities in the workplace etc.

I see the poll on this thread is currently showing that 87% of the people don't want to change the anthem.

The subject is closed, countryboy. Anyway, the poll here means nothing, this forum is heavily dominated by conservatives. I am sure if we hold a poll for death penalty, it will be heavily supported, abortion will be heavily opposed etc.

So the poll here means nothing, other than telling us what we already know, that the forum is heavily dominated by conservatives.

Get off this political crap- you're the only person on this forum who is obsessed with politics and categorizes people according to traits that YOU politicize. I look at my fellow human being in terms of common interests and ways we may be compatible and 95% of us think of politics on election day and only then vote for the politician who we deem to be least corrupt. Traits like kindness, selfishness, meanness, frugality, generosity have NOTHING to do with left wing, right wing bullsh*t. It's high time you quit your arrogant attitude that has 3/4 of the posters here p*ssed off at you and the other 1/4 are laughing at you. Until you learn such basic concepts as everyone can teach you something and 3/4 of debating is listening, you are going to be in incessant conflict with people.

Someone had to say it. Every post of his is the same theme, he has a one dimensional mind.
Ignore is such a beautiful thing ;-)
I can't be bothered . Unless you like that kind of sport. To me it gets boring fast.
In person it would be a whole different ball game .

Canadian Culture - what is it?

I have watched over the years as bits and pieces of Canadiana are given away, altered, changed, deleted, amended, and generally apologetic mea culpas have ruled the nation which is trying to woo
newcomers to its vast lands when the newcomers are choosing Canada as it is.... not as it is 'trying to be'.

What has gone wrong is Canada's image of itself - its self worth and its self importance?

There is no need of change to suit those who have never experienced the Canadian way - all newcomers are invited to take part and join - why then would Canada feel the need to accommodate
through change?

It has puzzled me that the great proud nation feels unworthy to maintain its origins, traditions, and all of its original characteristics which has made it vital and successful on the world stage...

Its culture creep. Keep it in the cities and you'll be fine.

Jesus you canucks are soft. If you all tried this **** with my favorite tune the star spangled banner, you would end up full of holes dead in a ditch, I tell you what.
You all need to find a medic and have him asses if you need some nuts or find out if yours have dropped yet.
You keep bending to the ****ing wims of the fobs of the world and you all will be crying on our shoulders next.

Hmmm. You do know the song is about British rockets red glare, don't you?

The song was given to you to know who was boss....

I'm surprised actually....I expected there to be no change, but I thought the entire debate was something dreamed up by some genius of strategy in the PMO to deflect attention from deficits and Afghan detainees.....

I thought it would run much longer.

I know. I'm just cynical.

Hey. There is nothing wrong with being cynical. ;-) What is funny is that the idea to muck with the anthem got put into the throne speech and I know that the throne speech is something that the cabinet would agonize over before handing it over to the GG to read to the public. The point being that it was not something that got into the throne speech by a simple slip-up. I'm guessing that there was such a hue and cry from the rank and file of the party that Harper felt he had to cut it off early.

Well the thread/debate is timely given the gov't has announced its intention to look at a gender neutral anthem.

As well, The "melting pot" is the USA's claim: we're supposed to be made up of hundreds of multicultural enclaves.
Does it really matter? Isn't the end result the same!

A country without Christmas.... How much farther do we have to go to be an unidentifiable, directionless blob?
LW it seems that daily we are expected to go further and further and continue to lose our identity as a nation of any kind. I don't believe anyone can define the term "Canadian" other than to use it as a means of showing where we live.

Indeed. Our model is the mosaic, not the melting pot.
Again - does it make a difference. Melting pot/mosaic - all the same.

The Conservative party of Canada secretly wants to adopt the American national anthem

Another sinister plot, eh? I wonder why they haven't trashed the Health Care system yet? Apparently that was on their agenda before Paul Martin lost that election? And what about Harper's "evil eyes?" Whatever happened to those?

If anyone wants to adopt the American national anthem, I would think it be Iggy...after all, he spent enough time down there to be intimately familiar with it. He's probably longing to hear something more familiar (like the U.S. anthem) to remind him of "home."

However, I'm against him on that one. I say keep O Canada as it is.

The poll is an integral part of the thread, and the thread is about our National Anthem. It's not about conservatives or liberals, it's about O Canada.

And the poll says 87% of us would like to keep it, as is. I'm quite gratified to see that outpouring of opinion in favour of retaining the anthem and all its wonderful traditions.

I'm sorry you obviously disagree with the poll, but that's what living in a free society is all about. Sometimes you just can't have your own way on everything.
