Last time I looked at the union newspaper that Les gets, the firefighters' union was fighting to have certain cancers declared a job hazard. I guess that's an example of a union not being of any use to the members.
I don't know what BC labour laws are, but in Ontario you have the right to refuse to work. The Occupational Health and Safety Act, Part V. Right to refuse or to stop work where health or safety in danger

I don't know about BC labor laws either.

Anyway, it's like I said, some unions are good, some bad, and some in between. And like Les said, if all employers treated all employees equally well and the gov'ts made sure they did, there'd be no need for unions.

Sorry, but I think you should have checked the law first so you can be informed when you talk about it. Surely Les knows, especially if he is a firefighter. You can't depend on a union, and you don't need a union to protect yourself if the laws are in place.

If you have the support of a union to convince a gov't to enact the laws it helps. :) A group of people is always more powerful than a few individuals.

Look to greece to see what canadian unions are evolving towards. Public sector unions are fighting any wage cutbacks while the country faces bankruptcy, just like GM unions did too. It's canada 5-10 years from now with public sector unions.

Unions are selfish and near sighted, choosing to milk a system dry and leave nothing for the next generration, or bankrupting the private sector or even leaving less senior union memebers up the creek like they did in the autosector.

I think the word "scab" removes a lot of the Unions credibility right there. No appreciation for other peoples rights or opinions. YOu just have to check out the cost of mailing a small packet to know where the Posties Union is coming from......................GREED.

Last week private banks milked more from the system than all unions have in all of time. But you want to fix the union problem, good luck, because you still will never get a deal from the bankers.

If you cross the line you aren't human and your opinion is worthless, you're a scab and worth less than frozen snot.

That's pretty much the response I got from a postie when I did cross the line- mail is pretty well sacred and NO ONE has the right to block your access to it. Don't worry I've worked with guys who's intellect is on par with yours.

Two wrongs don't make a right, they just make things twice as wrong.

No doubt they made you feel inferior. That will happen with envious lesser intellects.

But yet it is ok to go against your employers wishes, your government's wishes, your wife's wishes, your kids wishes, everyone else's wishes but not your union's wishes. hhhmm Whatever happened to freedom of expression?

You are free to express yourself as long as you stay on your side of the line.
