Is Don Cherry preaching the wrong hockey message?

Don Cherry has gotten away with promoting violence in hockey for too long when he should be leading the charge to stop hits to the head, says a renowned neurosurgeon who came out swinging just a day after calling the Canadian hockey icon a "negative influence" on the game.

"We've been too gentle with him over the years. We've allowed him to change the culture of hockey," Dr. Charles Tator told the Star on Sunday after returning from Regina, where he told a conference on concussions that the rock 'em, sock 'em type of hockey Cherry, left, preaches – and markets wildly popular videos of – only adds to the injury problem.

But not everyone agrees Cherry's off-ice antics contribute to on-ice dangers, and even Tator gives Cherry credit for helping out with a campaign years ago to prevent neck injuries.

Hockey Night In Canada executive producer Sherali Najak, in a statement released Sunday, described Cherry as a "leader in teaching tough, smart hockey" who "promotes respect amongst players at every level."

"Everyone who has watched Don over the years knows this," Najak added, "and any indication otherwise is misguided and a short-sighted misrepresentation of the facts."

Do you agree that comments made not only by Don Cherry could be giving the wrong example ?

Cherry owns a sting of sports bars too ... but you never hear him preaching bar-room brawl or drinking and driving. They guy's got to loosen those collars. They're cutting off circulation to his head.

Yes I agree LW, many hockey players ( former ) own bars and do not put up with any crap if it impacts their bottom line..

I've watched hockey since the mid fifties and I am bored with the game now, too many of these players without any guts. comes with making so much money and
I understand that. Don is making money, isn't that what we turned the game into?
Why do you think we this ultimate fighting, because there is a market for it, I don't
understand why, but hey, I like the odd fight, in a game brings some excitement to
the event. Kids don't listen anyway they watch what adults do and that determines
their view of the future. Its just part of the hype.

Fighting in hockey is the last resort of an untalented player.

There's nothing wrong with agression, hard hits, but fighting? Bah, not necessary, not part of the 'real' game. IMNSHO.

In the good ole days the talented players could hold their own for the most part but
they were protected by people who could really fight. The helmets make fighting
sort of meaningless now. Super Wayne was a well protected pansy and I didn't like
him at all, for example. I don't like this European stuff either its not hard hitting
and its boring as hell.

Any other sport and you get tossed for fighting.

If you want to watch dikfux fighting, go watch fighting. Hockey is a sport where you try to put the puck in the net, not punch some guy in the face. Check out the rules on how the winning team is determined; here's a clue: it's not by the fights.

I think you don't understand the game.

Some may applaud Cherry for being a great Canadian but guys like Cherry and Fred Shero were throw backs. Shero used to say "If you can beat 'em in the alley, you can beat'em on the ice. One of the things the Europeans brought us is conditioning. Nothing pointed that up better than the 72 Russia/Canada series. The Canadians had to work themselves into shape before they could win.. The World Junior Championships are the best hockey in the world today. We get to see great players before the NHL turns them into spoiled millionaires.
