Pentagon emails ask if Canadians are 'bad guys'

Can Canada be trusted?

In the midst of what turned out to be a bogus espionage scare over commemorative coins, senior Pentagon officials in Washington, D.C., speculated whether Canadians — widely considered to be among the United States' closest allies — might be "bad guys" involved in the spy caper.

"Who knows?" one official wrote in secret emails obtained this week by The Associated Press.

In sensational warnings that circulated publicly in late 2006 and early 2007, the Pentagon's Defence Security Service said coins with radio transmitters were found planted on U.S. army contractors on at least three occasions between October 2005 and January 2006 as the contractors travelled through Canada.

In January 2007, the government abruptly reversed itself and said the warnings weren't true. But the case remained a mystery until months later, when AP learned that the flap had been caused by suspicions over the image of a poppy on the Canadian quarter.

What suspicious contractors believed to be "nanotechnology" on the coins actually was a protective coating the Royal Canadian Mint applied to prevent the poppy's red colour from rubbing off.

This story makes a come back in the news.. What still amazes me is the legs these coins gathered at the Pentagon and how Canada was viewed in such light by its biggest ally ?

Heck, I dropped one of our two-piece-twonies in a US Customs office ... and had to suffer the indignity of questioning by officers with squirrel IQ's. God, I loved trucking.....

Canadian Spy Coins

Is the Pentagon paranoid or just plain stupid. How could anyone seriously believe that Canada would mint millions of coins embedded with tiny radio transmitters? It boggles my mind that anyone could be that asinine. What would be the point? How would one collect the data? Apparently, certain officials in the US government believed just that. The coin in question was the $.25 ‘poppy coin’.

“In sensational warnings that circulated publicly in late 2006 and early 2007, the Pentagon's Defence Security Service said coins with radio transmitters were found planted on U.S. army contractors with classified security clearances on at least three occasions between October 2005 and January 2006 as the contractors travelled through Canada.”

And these are the guys in charge of security for the US – sheesh! It is almost enough to make one weep with the idiocy of it all.

Fallen Idol

Tiger Woods is a great golfer when he is ‘on his game’. His success made him a media darling as well he might have known. Many people admired his prowess on the links and touted him as a role model for others. Now the same ravenous media that put him on a pedestal are reviling him in.

I in no way condone his behaviour, however, were he anyone else we would not be constantly bombarded with the ‘latest news’ on his downfall from grace. Jaysus! Leave the poor wretch alone.

China Scolds PM

Stephen Harper was rebuked by China for not visiting the country sooner. In spite of this, our PM announced that Chinese citizens will be able to visit Canada in larger numbers than previously. This might be good news for the Olympics. We need all the help we can get to pay for the darn thing.

“Perhaps the most sought after, and possibly beneficial, was China's granting Canada "approved destination status," a concession which will allow travel agents to vigorously promote travel to Canada, and boost tourism.

Chinese tourists to Canada could increase by 40,000 to 50,000 per year, with a possible increase in tourist revenues of $100 million annually.

The Canadian tourist industry has long pushed for the preferential status.

Harper spokesman Dimitri Soudas said it was a last-minute agreement, a pleasant surprise for Canadian officials who did not know it was coming.”

Cancer Not Caused by Cell Phone Use

Apparently, a study just released puts paid to the idea frequent cell phone use causes brain tumors. Some 50,000 people undertook brain studies over a 29-year period with no appreciable rise in the number of tumours.

“As part of this extensive study, 16 million people in Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden were tracked for what happened to rates of glioma and meningioma brain tumours among them over 30 years.

But the researchers found that only 60,000 of them developed brain tumours. This rate of brain tumour was not higher than that seen before the use of cell phones began.

The study found that there was no increase in risk. If there was any increase in risk, it was too small to be observed or the period needed for cell phones to cause brain tumours was longer than the period studied.

The Scandinavian study commenced just when cell phones were introduced.”

I would be a total schizophrenic by now had I believed even half the studies released over these past few decades. Coffee is good for you – but no, coffee is actually bad for you. Well coffee is okay for some but not others. Coffee can benefit your health. Same thing with aspirin and how bloody many other products that have been ‘studied’. Sometimes I think that whoever comes up with these ‘studies’ is simply too lazy to go out in the real world and get a real job. They would much rather use taxpayer’s money in the form of grants to dream up new ways of confounding us.

And lastly, Colbert is going to accept Richmond’s invitation to be the Official Oval Ombudsmen at the 2010 Olympics.
