They're listed as number 7 recyclable bags, and the boxes are fully recyclable.
Ok, that's cool. Still sounds work intensive to me. I guess there must be a process to separate paper from plastic coatings. As you mentioned though, glass is heavy so it's expensive to ship, but it is a lot less stress on the environment to use than oil products like plastic. And it doesn't offgas (outgas).

Since Corning seems to be buying up all the glass plants, they shut down the bottle plant here in NB. That means that the breweries have to import empty bottles from Ontario, and also means there is no market for recycled glass.
People should put pressure on the gov't to crack down on Corning, then, I think.

Back in the 70s, my grandmother would pick up the broken glass from the beach in front of her place on her walks, and would take the old glass down to the plant when she was going by, just so that it would be reused. She was about 30 years ahead of her time.
That's awesome! We used to pick stuff up when we were camping and stuff back in the 70s, too. Still do when we see junk lying around. I think it's getting better though.

I agree. And when buying local, I think I'd totally go with glass. But, when buying imported, it becomes a balancing act imo.

But if glass is so easy to make, it must be cheaper to make which should balance out the cost.

Glass takes more energy to manufacture from what I've been reading.

Plus, it's more expensive per litre of wine, to package in glass. 3L will fit in one box, only 1L will fit in a bottle, and then those boxes can fit more snugly into trucks, making shipping cheaper too. This site puts glass at consuming almost 3 times more energy than plastic in the long run.

Hey guys.
We've gone quite a ways from "Simple never fail recipes". Could we get back on topic?

That chili recipe sounds identical to mine, only difference ,i add a tablespoon of liquid smoke.http://avidityfitness.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/liquid-smoke.jpg and i use 2 cans of diced tomatoes instead of the soup.

Cooking the meat separately to drain the fat is critical..

No, the meat is better cooked in the acid of the tomato and it will be more tender than if it were cooked separately. It's not that hard to skim the fat off when the cooking is finished.

Looking for a 'great' recipe for seafood chowder/and clam chowder. I was recently
in Halifax, and in our hotel we ate the best seafood chowder I have ever tasted, it
was divine, lots of seafood and veggies and whatever they added to make it so good.
What do you suggest:

Not where we live, although we aren't far from the river, but far enough and
high enough to avoid any overflow problem.
The main problem was right downtown, and the biggest reason was because they
had to keep opening dam gates to let out the overflow, which then rushes right
down, thru town and out to the ocean, so that was a big build up, along with
high tides from the ocean.
It subsided nicely yesterday and overnight, but now it is so wild out, with heavy
rain and high winds, that I would imagine the problem will return.

I don't really need detailed recipe, just ingredients you usually use, and I can
do the rest.

Sorry it's taken so long..
This is one I've posted already but it is almost never the same. I add whatever else is available like a few shrimp, some sliced smoked salmon, or a bit of red snapper that can be added at the last moment.

This is my favourite clam chowder recipe but you can add a couple handfuls of shrimp, some finely sliced smoked salmon, some red snapper chunks and the whole character changes.
Clam chowder

There are thousands of different ways to make clam chowder but this is my favorite. I use canned clams because it is easier than messing with fresh clams, and canned clams don't have sand in them. Like all chowders, it is heavy on the potatoes and is a real comfort food.

Ingredients

three cans of Clam Nectar
two cans baby clams
one medium onion finely chopped
four or five medium to large potatoes coarsely chopped
one cup finely chopped celery
one carrot finely chopped
two tablespoons chopped parsley
one teaspoon dried thyme
three cups water
two cups half and half or coffee cream
salt and pepper to taste

Put everything but the clams and the cream into a large pot. Bring to a boil and turn down heat and barely simmer for one hour. Add clams and cream, gently stir and barely re-heat....Don't boil...and serve. I say don't boil once the clams are in because that
makes the clams tough and rubbery.
This chowder goes well with some nice crusty bread rolls.

The other clam chowder (my fave and its basically the same as my seafood chowder posted elsewhere):

2 liters of canned tomatoes (or a liter and a half of fresh ones with 2 cups of water)
2 cans of baby clams, broth included
4 cups of chopped onions
4 cups of sliced carrots
4 cups of sliced celery
4 cups of cubed spuds
half a slab of bacon chopped, sauteed to crispy, and mostly drained
couple leafs of dulse
a couple bay leafs
4 cloves of garlic chopped
couple pinch of oregano
couple pinch of basil

bring tomatoes (and water if necessary) to a boil and add other ingredients while you saute the bacon. After it's started boiling reduce the heat and add the bacon bits. Serve with garlic toast or crackers or something.
Sorry about the recipe size, but stews, chilis, soups are things I make in large quantities so I can feed a horde or two people and freeze the leftovers.

A quick question Anna What do you do with the fresh tomatoes? Do you leave the skins on or do you peel them and take out the tough bit where the stem is?

World's Simplest Refreshing Drink

1 glass of water
2 lemon slices

Squeeze lemon slices into the water. Throw the slices into the glass. Drink.

Yeah, it sounds stupid but it's actually quite good for you, it quenches thirst like crazy, and it's cheap. It also 'kick-starts' your digestive system in the morning, which makes everything work better.

You did say SIMPLE, right?

I blanch the tomatoes to make the skins easy to take off and then I remove the stem parts. :)
