Marketed Bulemia?

My gripe of the day is 'cleanses'.

While I can understand the allure of some of the cleanses, those that market themselves for long term use strike me as nothing more than cleverly marketed bulemia.

If I were to brag to my friends tomorrow that I'd lost 30 lbs by taking laxatives every day for two months, they'd be appalled and I'd end up booked into a clinic for eating disorders. But, call it a 'cleanse', market it with a sharp logo, and it suddenly becomes healthy? I really don't think so.

I know a woman who thinks all illnesses can be cured with a daily enema. That seems obsessive to me - not healthy. The loss of weight may be accompanied by loss of mind too. Beware of anything that is pushed by slick advertising or endorsed by celebrities. When Acai berries were recommended by Opra I thought, who would want to jump on her roller coaster ride.

I find the acai berry racket especially annoying because it disregards the phenomenal anti-oxidants that grow locally and don't require massive distances of shipping. But do you really disregard everything the celebs do? Is my daily coffee enema not good?

If it's good enough for Whitney Houston, it's good enough for you I guess.

I don't need no damn enemas, if I need a good cleansing I just drink a 12 pack of lucky lager, it cleanses you and then some. lmao

I remember back in the seventies there was a letter to the Playboy Advisor from someone wondering why Playboy didn't discus enemas. The response was simply a 'with friends like ours, who needs enemas'.

I think maybe once every year or two it's good to flush the system out. I don't see an enema doing much along those lines but four ducolax and 6 liters of apples juice will clear you out proper. Fasting through it is important and eating some specific foods to return the enzymes and bacteria to the intestine afterward is just as important.

It's simple and most effective. You will find that it's doesn't cost much either which is probably why you don't hear about that much. As well too often I think causes as many problems as you hope to cure.

Proper diet is the key and sadly it is expensive and very difficult to maintain for some. Myself included.

I'm finding more and more that mood maintenance is going to be the hurdle I need to overcome in order to hit the point of food maintenance.

Isn't this the same stuff Dr. Ho's infomercials were trying to sell?

I'm not familiar with whick commercials you mean, but likely. There are a million and one like them. All have the same effect.... they serve as a laxative and diuretic, to essentially drain your system and dehydrate you. You can lose weight mighty quick if there's nothing in your intestines, and you're dehydrated.

Seems to me you can accomplish all that with a couple of cups of Espresso and about a 1/4 pound of fresh blueberries for breakfast! The Espresso will rattle your nerves so bad you can walk around shaking all day (should help anyone's waistline) along with coffee (caffeine)being a natural diuretic and the fresh blueberries are an anti-oxident that are self explanatory. Just leave the blueberries at home when you go camping.

Contrary to popular belief, caffeine does not act as a diuretic when consumed in moderation.
That is from wikipedia, but I had originally read it in some papers. Coffee makes you pee because you drink a lot of water when you drink a lot of coffee.

Certainly coffee boosts the metabolism. Like they sometimes prescribe crystal meth--oops, not the crystal form--just normal methamphetamine for weight loss, one can achieve a minor similar effect from caffeine. Burn off those blood sugars faster than they can store themselves!

Some companies in the acai berry industry have very questionable business practices. The BBB gets a ton of complaints.

Blueberries do the same thing and they are local. The Acai thing is just marketing. Opra is probably heavily invested. We discovered that the Blueberry/Acai drink served at one of our local coffee shops is not so good for us free radicals.;-)

Oh my... apparently I've crossed an avid purger who'd rather dole out a bad rep with no comment than discuss the issue.

*shrugs* No biggie, I just found it funny. If someone has some good info on why cleansing for months is a good idea, it would be cool to see it shared rather than just slapping a neg rep on a post.
