This is one of the most famous and talked about buddhist stories for generations after generations. In old days man was close to nature and it was easy to become silent. This story belongs to that time. One day two buddhist monks were returning to their monastery silently. Watching their thoughts, watching each step and witnessing everything.
A small river used to flow close to their monastery. Walking slowly, meditatively they came across the river. There was no boat men in the river.
Instead of boatmen, one beautiful young lady was waiting for the boat man to cross the river. The Sun was about to set and darkness was spreading its kingdom.
They waited for some time for the boat men and eventually decided to cross the river on their own. One monk who was Young carried the lady on his shoulder and three of them crossed the river. On other side of river, lady thanked the monks and went on her way and two monk started moving towards their monastery meditatively.
Meditation the very breath of their all actions. After some time Old monk broke the silence "I will tell everything to master"
The Young Monk asked surprisingly "what will you tell to master"
Old Monk said " you are spoiled , you have carried the woman on your shoulders, its sin to touch a woman for a monk"
Young Monk replied "I had dropped the woman at river bank only.''
But you are still carrying her in your head"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Some one throws garbage in our house we get angry, but if some one throws garbage in our mind then we don't mind. TV, newspaper, gossips are all garbage. Meditation is the cleanser which cleans all these garbage.

Your point of view .

He was able to set her down. You or I might carry her forever. That too would be a meditative journey. The old guy knows the score on the weight of women. If you can't carry the load don't pick it up you might drop it and break her.The mind always carries the heavier loads. Celibacy, the road to enlightenment. two bits please

Celibacy, the road to enlightenment.

More like the road to insanity and pedophilia. There have ben periods in my life when I have been celibate but not of my choosing. It tends to make me crazier than normal (for me). I would think that long term self imposed celibacy would create monsters.

And yet celibacy is called for when one can barely carry their own load, whatever that may be. It is a mistake and a disservice to the woman if you begin what you cannot finish with her just to satisfy your own pressing demands. There are demands or undertakings which no other can share with you, they are between you and the universe only. The old guy in the clumsily told story reminds the young that he can't or shouldn't try to walk two paths at the same time. The path for the individual spirit is completely different from that of a pair of spirits. You can probably fill the grand canyon with the bones of relationships undertaken in haste without the sustaining strength.

He was touching her with his mind when he should have been busy somewhere else as he promised when he took the vows. The sin was/is permitting distractions. Women are very distracting men are very distracting sex is very distracting the laundry blows off the line into the dust and the pot boils over and burns, whoopie.

However, in a traditional Chinese story like this, monks can't be monks if they have thoughts of women on their minds. Women get in the way of spirituality, they should get married and have children according to traditional cultures. Or be cloistered in convents.

So this guy has to make a choice because in his monastery he now has something on his mind he have didn't yesterday. This will cause disruption in the monastery and he may be ejected. At minimum, the top job is now out of reach.
