To take a more concrete example for SJP:
Conservatives are usually identified as more nationalistic than liberals. Yet would you be in favour of taking incremental steps towards a common military, common currency, common citizenship, common adopted, revised or created second language, common world federation? Even some liberals would be more nationalistic than I, making them closer to the Consertatives than even me when it comes to international policy. So if the Liberals are more conservative than me on that front, then how can you so easily label me conservative without using alot of hyphens? At most, you could say I've got some conservative traits, but certainly not that I'm simply a conservative. Most conservatives would reject the claim that I'm a conservative, I'm sure, even if they acknowledge a few conservative traits about me.
