I just say "good one Jim" as I woukl to the rest of them.

JLM, I think that would be about appropriate reaction. As to the rest, I can see two arguments. Some probably just want to make fun of him.

However, others may genuinely want to encourage him. If he rolls a strike or a spare only once in a while, it is quite an achievement compared to someone who does it all the time. For him it is a much bigger achievement than it would be for you. So it stands to reason that somebody would think that he deserves more praise than you would in a similar situation.

So it could be considered patronizing behavior. But insulting? Perhaps yes, perhaps no.

Let me give you another example. Suppose a couple has two kids, one gets straight As, the other can only manage Bs and Cs. Now suppose he gets an A. The parents would probably praise him much more than they would the other kid, who may have got 5 or 6 As in the same exam.

Patronizing? Perhaps. But instilling? Hardly.

No one is trying to make fun of him, they just think he'll feel good about himself if they "fall all over him", whereas I know full well if I was Jim, I would resent being treated different as I would take it as recognition of my handicap. JUST MY OPINION THOUGH. With the brothers report cards you mention, maybe one is clever and the other is dumb or maybe one is a hard worker and the other is lazy. In the case of lazy I might tend to play it up, while in the case of dumb I may tend to play it down. Just because it's easier to change lazy than dumb.

" She refers to herself as ‘we’"- IS THAT RIGHT, I know Queen Victoria did, but I think that habit ended with her. Am I wrong?

And I must admit I am baffled how SirJosephPorter can in any way, shape or form consider Sarah Palin his inferior. Or himself to her superior.

Yukon, Palin is a politician, and as such, a legitimate subject (and object) of ridicule. When far right calls Obama a Communist, a Fascist, a Nazi, a Muslim terrorist etc., they consider themselves superior to Obama, as well as they want to insult him.

At least Palin Joan of Arc is not a term of insult. Anyway, as I said before, Joan of Arc does to make fun of Plain, it makes fun of her slavish, adulating supporters, which admire, adulate and lavishly praise each and every action of her, however bizarre and ridiculous (e.g. when she could not tell Katie Couric which magazines she read regularly, her adulating supporters blamed Couric for asking the question, they did not blame Palin for not being able to answer it).

So calling her Joan of Arc makes fun of her supporters, not of her. But even if it made fun of her, it is no big deal. Joan of Arc is nothing compared o what far right calls Obama (Nazi, Fascist, communist, Muslim terrorist, illegal alien etc.).

I don't know, JLM, i assume it still continues. If that is how royalty traditionally referred to themselves, old traditions die hard.

You may be right, JLM. But I would consider such a behavior patronizing, but not insulting.

But then there is intent. Just because someone does not get it does not mean the patronizing tone was not intended to be insulting. Then, some people may not realize how patronizing and obnoxious they really are and can never figure out why they provoke such bad reactions from people or internet posters.

Said1, I assume you are referring to me. I never ever insult anyone. It is not my problem if I rub some people (especially Trolls) the wrong way. Some people just don’t like strong, opinionated views which happen to be contrary to their own.

Ironsides:You should know by now...that for some people, just because their party of choice is in power, they can do no wrong....defend, defend....to the last stroke of the pen:smile:

JP...only you have changed your tune. You have once again been humbled so you will try to tap dance a little...try to save face.

Nobody is buying it.

Bravo! Too funny. Funny but true.

Then again... some people know they are being obnoxious and find joy in being so. No matter how foolish they sound does not matter because they need ANY sort of attention that their real life doesn't provide.

Sorry, EagelSmack, you are the one who changed your tune. At first you were insisting that patronizing is the same as insult, now you claim that it can be same as insult, a totally different thing.

My message has been constant throughout.

Nobody is buying it.

Now, that is a mater of opinion, isn’t it? And even if true (which I don’t accept), that doesn’t make me wrong.

Patronizing can be insulting...simple.

EagleSmack, patronizing can be insulting, really? But that is not what you have been saying so far. So far you have maintained that patronizing is the same as an insult.

If you say that patronizing can be insulting, the clear implication is that sometimes patronizing is insulting, other times it isn’t. Is that what you are saying? If so, you have changed your tune.

So before I let you know what I think about it, exactly what are you saying, that patronizing is the same as insulting, or patronizing can be insulting (the clear implication is, sometimes)?

Come on you guys, I can not really figure out what the bickering is all about. Yes, patronizing can be insulting and in many cases is the same as insulting. However a person can be patronizing to a person without that person necessarily taking it as an insult. These words are known as synonyms which mean to have similar meanings. Seems like a silly thing to argue over. There's bigger fish to fry.

That is exactly what I was saying, JLM. Thank you. Similar is not the same. Some people like to bicker just for the sake of arguing.
