"The Alliance of Concerned Jewish Canadians welcomes the Canadian Union of Postal Workers' passage of resolution 338/339 at their recent convention and
congratulates CUPW for its courage in becoming the first national labour union in North America
to take such a strong stand against the repressive policies of the Israeli State," said ACJC National Coordinator Diana Ralph.
"As a coalition of Jewish organizations and individuals from across Canada,
we represent the concerns of Canadian Jews who support a peaceful resolution to the Israel Palestinian conflict," Ralph continued. "We believe that
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is rooted in the expulsion of Palestinians from their land sixty years ago, coupled with the
brutality of more than
forty years of occupation," she explained. "Over the years, the policies of the
Israeli government have become increasingly repressive as the state enforces its rule over a captive Palestinian population and attempts to impose its will on the rest of the region."
"This increased repression is exemplified by
the construction of the illegal separation wall in the West Bank and the 2006 military assaults on both Lebanon and Gaza, which
destroyed infrastructure and
imposed collective punishment via the extensive killing and maiming of civilians," Ralph emphasized. "The ongoing siege of Gaza has created
an unprecedented humanitarian crisis for Gaza's 1.5 million people. In addition,
Israel continues to
threaten a preemptive attack on
Iran, the
consequences of which would be
unimaginable for both the Middle East and the rest of the world."
"It is time for
all people of good will to take a
stand against this dangerous, aggressive behaviour. The
ACJC applauds CUPW for taking such a stand. It is our
hope that more national unions in Canada, North America and around the world follow CUPW's lead so that we can all look forward to a day when life in Israel/Palestine is no longer be defined by occupation and war, but by the enjoyment of human rights, dignity and justice for all of the people living there," Ralph concluded.
