Then police don't need them either? They absolutely serve a purpose, it's called defense, a far more useful purpose than hunting, (we don't hunt with them only because we're not allowed to, even though some are made exclusively for that purpose and some are more accurate than some rifles).

Using a rifle for defense in an urban setting is disaster waiting to happen, hunting rifles are up to 40 times more powerful than defense pistols.

Then police don't need them either?

I would like to see a handgun ban though. It serves no useful purpose (hunting) in the hands of the average Canadian citizen

Handguns were never intended for hunting. Some loon decided that it would "be cool" to hunt with one. The same moron that thinks it cool to fish with dynamite

They serve no purpose PERIOD!!!

Nowhere in history has the disarming of law abiding citizens had a positive effect on crime except in totalitarian states, then the major crimes are committed by the state and its operatives.
I didn't say disarm everybody, two knives in the situation I mention would probably have resulted in no violence. I'm all for being able to carry a loaded side-arm as long as everybody gets one.

It seems a little hard to think your life is in immediate danger if you need a rifle (because of the range), unless he has one also and that is quite unlikely.
Has anybody suggested non-lethal rounds.

Baloney.

there are a great many handguns, from the .44 Magnum revolver up to dozens of types of sinle shot or bolt action handguns, and some types of semi-auto handguns that were designed SOLELY for hunting........some of the single shot handguns are both more powerful and more accurate than some of our traditional hunting rifles...

So, it does not require a "loon" to think hunting with handguns is an interesting pastime.......that requires slightly more skill, and somewhat more discretion that hunting with a rifle.

in addition, handgun target shooting is an olympic sport, and practised by tens of thousands of Canadians........as are several other recreational activities with handguns....IPSC, silouette, cowboy shooting, just to name 3.

And, last but certainly not least, I hardly consider self-defence "no useful purpose".....if so, why are the cops carrying them?

That is truely reaching for a rationale. Justification or for something that is morally repugnant is the true mark of a desperate person

If you have a gun and pull it out, your intent is to protect yourself. Better to stop the assailant, maybe have some regrets later, but your safe. Non- Lethal rounds probably would get you hurt or worse. (some people they have minimal or no effect on)

Now there's a solution. We could evolve into a society of gun dependants. Like a bank in Florida rewards you with the option of your own handgun when you open your first bank account. Makes delivering those newspapers and cutting that grass take on a whole new perspective

In order to ensure complete coverage though, we should issue them with a drivers liscence. I can't think of a better safety measure than having my trusty 357 handy when someone cuts me off on the freeway. After all, if they cut me off who knows what kind of criminal intent the might have had planned....

MORALLY REPUGNANT??????!!!!! :angryfire:

That is probably the most idiotic, self-righteous, ideologically unsound, logically flawed, and culturally chauvanistic idea I have ever encountered on these threads.....

exactly WHAT about the ownership and use of handguns is "morally repugnant"???......., remembering, of course, that our troops carry them, our police carry them, armoured car guards carry them, and several hundred thousand Canadians, including most of the guys I know, own them. That includes most of people that I have admired for their honesty, their straight-forwardness, their gentility, and their humanity.....

See if you can strain that feeble, tiny bit of matter between your ears that you soooo loosely call a brain, and try to come up with a logical, coherent answer instead of a blindly moronic attempt at insult.:angryfire::angryfire:

Which, btw, you consistently sink to the instant someone demonstrates you don't have a clue what you are talking about.

Tsk task Colpy. Musn't lose your cool.

Let me put it is simple terms. The majority see no need for handguns and find there use contrary to societal needs - hence their repugnancy. There are the few fringe slices of the pie that see them as a comforter. A "soother" if you will

our troops carry them, our police carry them, armoured car guards carry them,

...and they have every right to. That is part of their function. you must have missed sentence with "averge citizen"

I'm not going to comment on your "value" system or morales.

I'm not the one who blew my cool.

Breathe deeply Colpy. Get up. Walk around. Don't kick the dog...

It's all be ok in the morning

btw. I'm laughing my butt off

It is simple, really..........you compared handgun hunting to a "stunt". literally to fishing with dynamite.

I politely showed you had no idea what you are talking about.........that some handguns have been designed for only hunting for over 50 years.....

you return by insulting the moral fibre of my late father, the kindest and most decent man I've ever known, myself, my brothers, my friends, and hundreds of thousands of Canadians I don't even know....nor do you.

thus proving yet again you have NO IDEA what you are talking about.

As for me in full rhetorical flight...on reread, that was pretty good, wasn't it?

Glad you're amused.

Now try to talk sense.

Oh, and BTW, if you think the majority dictate the equivalent of moral righteousness.....well, you're beyond hope.

And what society needs is expanding and protected freedom of the individual, not the "tyranny of the majority".

Pure emotion over logic Colpy old sod. I would know your father, brother, friends from Harry Higgins.

Hunting with handguns is a "stunt"

Do try and be logical and not so emotional. Logic will win every time.

Obviously random gunfire hasn't enter you life yet, when it does your post will be much different.

B b b b but that's precisely why I need to be so armed. So when I hear gunshots in the street, I can pull my sniper rifle out of the closet right away and shoot anyone who looks suspicious, right from through my bedroom window.

(sigh)

A democracy or not, the will (or opinion) of the majority has no place interfereing with the basic right of mankind to believe as they will, or to exercise their basic human rights.....one of which is the right to self-defense.

de Touqueville's great criticism of universal democracy was what he labeled "the tyranny of the majority", which he saw as the ability of the mass to unnecessarily restrict the actions of the dissident........great democracies avoid that pitfall......

What a retard! Open window, then shoot, oh yeah, the pointy end is the dangerous end, try not to forget that.

Shouldn't the thread be Americans and their toys should stay at home?

Now that the pictures of the guns are coming out would you all like some graphic pictures of what these things do to little Palestinian children? (those are the only ones that can be found)
