to continue this new york thing, tom rennie was fired today, took the fall for
sather, who is the one who has failed here, a good coach bites the dust again,
and the rumour is that torterelli will take his place.
I hope the team is prepared for the 'flying' words.

You beat me to the punch, talloola.;-)

Renney was fired today, and it looks certain now that Torterelli is the next head coach of the Rangers. I don't think it will help as the season is too far gone, but it may help for next year.

Rennie has been known to be too light on players. Perhaps they thought that was a good fit for the pricey guys in NY. What that team needs is someone like Pat Quinn. He commands respect from players at all levels.

You sort of beat to it Kreskin. I remember Rennie here in Vancouver and he seemed more like "one of the guys" then a Leader / Coach. He was not even what I would call a Captain type person.. He made a great assistant coach behind a great boss but could not command leadership himself.

Maybe I am wrong and he gets the guys respect, but it doesn't look like it on the ice.

The team played very well till a short while ago, I wonder how they happened to
play that well under a 'soft' coach.

Players have to take the responsibility, and the management in new york as well,
the coach is just the fall guy in this case, but in saying that, torterella is the
opposite to rennie, and he will kick ass and demand things, don't know if that
is the right approach either, as they played well for half the season, under rennie.
But you know, the firing of the coach will jerk them back to attention before
another coach even steps onto the ice.
Coaches have a tough time, torterella coached t. bay to a stanley cup, then he
coached himself right out of a job, as the team went down hill from there.
They didn't have any goalkeeping, but the coach took the fall for that, as well.
His mouth didn't help him out either.

Pat Quinn is over the hill when it comes to NHL players, in my opinion he is good
for the young guys, and that's it, I never did like him much either as a coach or
a general manager, it seems everyone in this part of the country can only talk about pat quinn, I hope I never ever see him in vancouver again. He ruined things
for the canucks when bure was there, was very 'cheap' with him, cheated him out
of promised money, then he was too cheap with larionov, wouldn't pay the russian
hockey federation to free larionov of having to pay them part of his salary every
year, so larionov left, went elsewhere where he freed himself of that problem,
we could have had larionov till he retired.
Pat Quinn is one of the 'ole boys' ,cigar smokin, and terribly
out dated in todays hockey world.
But I like him with the kids, he just needs to stand there and keep their energy
level in tact, and be the 'grandad' coach', I hope he never steps back into the NHL.
There are lots of young coaches being groomed for the nhl, working in the ahl, and
working as assistant coaches, they should be given their turn now.

Talloola, hockey is still a business and every GM has a rap sheet a mile long on hindsight and players who left. Quinn brought the team closer to the cup than anyone. I'm not suggesting he come back to Vancouver but he could be a good fit in New York. I have no doubt he'd do more for that club than who everyone thinks it will be.

Your right Kreskin, and Talloola the benefit of having Pat Quinn in NY is that he can't be in Vancouver :)

That was then, this is now, he is very much older, he had his time, step aside
and let the younger coaches have their time, it is their turn, coach the jr kids
for awhile then go to florida or palm springs and veg out.
He's also part owner of the giants, he should hang out there, and smoke his cigars,
and tell all his old stories.

Will be interesting to see if avery still comes to rangers, as torterella, a while back
called him an a** hole, and said he wouldn't want anything to do with him.

Turned out to be a close game last night. San Jose pulled out the 1-0 victory. Dallas played well, but Nabokov was up to the challenge. I think there are 11 games on tonight, so there will be a lot more action.

Watched first two periods, then watched a movie, dallas has key injuries, or
seems they would have pulled it off, oh well, it's better for us that dallas
lose anyway. Haven't checked the games for tonight yet, thought there would
be lots, as last night was so sparse.
The goaltending all over the league is quite amazing, best in years I think.

2008-2009 Regular Season
PlayerGPGAP+/-

Since we last met montreal, they have come together quite well, are playing better now, kovalev has returned and seems to be renewed, and the addition of mathew schneider has made them stronger on their power play, so, tonights game shouldn't resemble the last
one, and canucks will have to bring their A game and play a 'complete' game
and not one period as they did against toronto.
Wins are nice, but just as it was when they were losing all the time, it is the
process and not the outcome which really measures a team, and the process
in the last game favoured toronto, but thanks to burrows and sundin we did
find a way to actually get the two points.
A win tonight would cap off the eastern road trip very nicely, and they can come home
feeling pretty good about themselves.

The Canucks did not look good tonight. In fact nobody on the team looked good. Let's hope they can this one:roll: behind them.

Canucks outshot montreal 34 to 17, and had many good scoring chances which didn't end up in goals, halak was outstanding, and should be commended for his
goaltending.
The first goal against us was caused by wellwood, he is playing poor hockey these
days, and I would stick him back in the press box for awhile.
Burrows major penalty was unfortunate, he was defending himself, but in doing so
he stuck his stick right in the face of the opponant, so that caused another goal.
It was a five minute major because it was intentional and not an accident, or it
would have been a double minor.
If I was a montreal fan I wouldn't be very proud of their team tonight, but would
be excited by the play of their goalie, he was great.
They had a very good road trip, didn't play their best all the time, but found a
way to win 3 of 4, so that is successful.
They come home now, have a day rest then play tampa bay.
They aren't going to win all the time, the other teams want to win too, and
montreal were lucky to win tonight, and I hope they bow and scrape to their
goalie.
It's easy to say we missed many chances, but put yourself on the montreal side,
and realize how halak played, he outplayed luongo for sure, and luongo played
fine, just wasn't our hero tonight.
I remember early in the season when we played Boston, and Tim Thomas stoned
us, we couldn't score on him, same sort of game.

The only reason Montreal won that game is Halak standing on his head. He won that game hands-down. He is now the #1 goalie in Montreal and will continue to play until he falters. Price is going to be the backup for the forseeable future.

Man, they seem to just kill goaltenders in Montreal!8O

Also, did you notice that the fans booed Sundin every time he touched the puck? Remember what I said about Toronto fans being classy and not booing him and saying what would happen if it was Montreal? Thank you "classy" Montreal fans for proving my point.

You definitely were right, they bood him all through the game, and after awhile it sounds really stupid, you'd think they would get over it sometime in the first period, but no, they are vicious in montreal.

I'm going to montreal in october for a few days, will get a couple of tickets for
a game, maybe even against the canucks, but probably not, they usually don't
go east at the beginning, I have never been there before, will be a great experience, but I have to learn where to stay and where to eat and places to go.

It's good that halak did so well, as it might give price some time to get his game back together, he is also a great goalie, just has hit the wall for awhile, he will be back.
I really felt bad for burrows last night, I guess he did bring his stick up and get
a piece of the guys face, but I sure didn't think he should have been given a
major, and at first I thought the other guy was going to get the gate, and it
did make a big difference in the game, caused a goal, and upset our lines for
the rest of the game.

The Kesler line hasn't played that great for a couple of games, kesler has
lost his recent touch, and dimitra is just too soft, passes are too slow and many times
close to being intercepted, and now I hear he has fractured the tip of his little finger, so I guess he will dissapear again for awhile, that's his season, part time.
Sundin looks OK to me, now that he is healthy again he will continue improving.

The canucks didn't play a 'great' game, but much better than montreal, and
we deserved to win, by the chances we had, halak made sure those chances
didn't result in goals, so, good on him, he deserves the praise.

Only 4 games on last night.

Philadelphia beat LA 2-0.

Pittsburgh beat the Islanders 1-0. Pittsburgh was without Crosby(sore groin) and Whitney(family emergency). Their offense looks pretty weak sometimes.

Detroit dominated the game against San Jose last night and won 4-1. Hossa got his bell rung by an elbow to the head, and left in the second period. I am not sure if he will miss any time, though. They haven't said if it was serious or not.

Toronto beat the Rangers 2-1 in a shootout. New coach, same result for NY. They score one goal yet again. I don't think they are even going to make the playoffs to be honest. I think Pittsburgh is going to somehow sneak in and take the 8th place spot.

Yeah, we watched the detoit/san jose game, detroit dominated, that's for sure.
On team 1040 this morning they described the 'fight' that markus naslund was in
last night, very short, announcer said, "Naslund is fighting, he's got a bear hug on
the guy (forget name), this is very strange, better go to a commercial".

Michael Grabner has been called up to join the canucks, so I would think dimitra
is out 'again' with that injured finger, canuck fans are going to have an injured
'different' finger soon from showing it to dimitra for all the times he's out of the
lineup.
Grabner is very talented offencively, but does lack a bit in other departments, so
I wouldn't expect him to come onto the team and start making everyone very
excited, but I do hope he can handle himself on the team, and begin to prove
that he belongs on the canucks, he's still only 21, so he has lots of time to make
improvements and mature, I hope they keep him even if he is sent back down
again.
They say they are going to build strength from within, so they have to keep all
the young players who have potential, and that includes mason raymond, if
they shovel them off somewhere too soon, they will never build a strong core
of players on the farm team, or even on their own team.
Mason Raymond showed us how talented he really is, so we should have patience
and wait for him to find it again, might not be till next season.
