What Does The Crucifix Mean to You?

First, I have to state theat this is not a thread to start a fight. I will not answer or challenge your beliefs, but I would like to hear them.

The Crucifix

I would like to state that I do believe in the higher power, be it God, or the Universal life force. I believe there is something there that is overseeing us, and trying to explain to each and every one of us that we can get to where it is. This may be a different dimension, or astral plan, wherever. I also think Jesus is an outstanding example of humanity, and I want to be just like him.

I had these beliefs a long before the De Vinci movie came out, so this has nothing to do with the movie. In that respect, anyway.

What was the real reason that Jesus was killed? I feel that he was killed for the simple reason that the general population was jealous of him for having these "special" abilities. Jesus was in touch with the higher force, was willing to dedicate his life to it, try to teach the world about it, and he was given "special" abilities in return; as anyone would be given. He did not try to use the abilities in a negative fashion, or for personal gain.

I believe this upset a lot of people and they chose to persecute Jesus and release a common criminal who was below the status of the general population. One who, most thought, they were better than.

This brings me to the thought of the Crucifix.

In the time the public display of criminals during execution was the practice, and was until into the 1900's, I believe. Some countries it still is.

The idea behind this is to set an example to the other people that if you commit a crime, you do the time, and this is what the time is going to be. Now, if you are to think that being nails to a cross as a punishment, and the crime was following the higher power, and listening to your thought voice, or Holy Spirit. Would anyone really want to follow the higher power to the degree the Jesus did. Would you really want to be as Jesus was; a faithful follower of the higher power, who had such a grasp on his reality, that he could manipulate the matter around his and manifest things out of mid-air.

I do not feel the church wanted people to follow Jesus to that degree, so they had him killed and planted on a cross to say you cannot be like him or you will be killed. Now remember Christianity is just starting at this point. To this point they just had the Lord and the pagan gods.

The leaders of the first churches were in great power positions and would not be willing to give that up easily. They switch sides, bringing the Crucifix with them as a warning to the Christians. Thus, keeping them in line, and charging 10% of their wages to tell them they could never be as good as Jesus.

Is the Crucifix a symbol to say "He died for our sins" or "If you think you can be better than everyone else; this is what's going to happen to you."???

I think Christianity has sort of lost its way and that we should be praying to the Lord rather than Jesus. I know the whole statement about getting to heaven through Christ, but he is not the big guy, OK.

The Lord created Jesus the same as he created us, take that as you want. Jesus stood on the Earth the same as we do. The difference is that Jesus worshipped God, and we worship Jesus.

To my Military friends out there I will give an analogy. There is God, the general, and there is Jesus, the captain. The captain wrote down an order for you to follow while you are on patrol. The general (confirmed) comes over the radio, the Holy Spirit, and tells you to do something different from the written order, the situation has changed. What should you do?

So, who should we be worshipping God or Jesus?

God Bless You All

Neither, in my view. After decades of pondering the matter, I came to the conclusion that god either doesn't exist, or if he does he's hopelessly inept and needlessly cruel, and Jesus, if he existed at all as a historical person, was just a man. Neither is worthy of unconditional admiration. On the matter of your original question in the thread title, the crucifix to me is a symbol of murderous superstition and cruelty. I presume by 'crucifix' you mean a cross with the figure of Jesus on it; a cross by itself makes a nice piece of jewellery.

I thought it was Gaelic and it was what the Scottish chief's burned on a hill to get the rest of the clan chief's to come to the great hall. And I thought this all happened before Jesus Christ.

I find the whole concept of the crucifix rather bizarre, like some sadistic icon. I find Easter a sadistic festivity, celebrating some poor bugger's suffering and torment.

The original Gaelic cross had a circle in the middle and had a different meaning. The Circle and the Cross have been universal spiritual symbols since humans stared to talk but combine they represent the four seasons, the four directions and the four stages of life, among others.

Absolutely, the cross as a symbol in various forms long predates Christianity. One form of it, the swastika we all now associate with Nazism, is an ancient pagan symbol whose real significance has been all but destroyed by its connection to that gang of brutal thugs and lunatics. I'll cheerfully wear a small simple cross on a chain around my neck, and often do, especially when I know I'm going to be among a certain type of serious fundamentalist. I'm closely related to a few, so such encounters are pretty much inevitable a few times a year. It makes them uncomfortable, they think its idolatry, and I think they deserve to be made uncomfortable, they're arrogant self-righteous knobs, though so far none of them have had the balls to confront me about my idolatry, they just whisper about it among themselves. But a swastika, no way. Don't want anyone to see me wearing that. Too bad; I like the shape in the abstract, but its associations are too horrible.

It really doesn't mean anything to me. It does remind me of a sword and the crusades though because originally Christians used a star for their symbol but the cross was more inspiring for the boys going on crusade, I presume because it looks like a sword, and since I know that history it reminds me of the crusades.

My grandparents were Christians and I could never understand why they wanted crosses around - wouldn't it remind them of Jesus dying? Is that a good thing? I don't get it.

Anyway, since I'm pretty sure no one named Jesus ever actually existed I don't associate the cross with him. Even if there was a real Jesus once he sure wasn't the pasty white long haired fellow people seem fond of making him out to be. At that time in Rome short hair was the norm and even the Bible exhorts people against having long hair. So I just can't connect the two images in my head. They seem absurdly improbable. Then there is the other problem that Jesus was Jewish and so most probably from Africa and black. When I imagine Jesus I see a short haired black male Roman Jew - quite at odds with any common depiction.

The crucifix reminds me of my childhood catholic school time, and all the catacism,
and that crucifix was so important at that time of my life, a reminder to be obedient, don't sin, say your prayers, and be a good girl, and also that jesus died on the cross, had spikes hammered in his hands and feet, and that horror story was so scary that it controled my life for some time, the church that I attended for years had a 'huge' crucifix hanging up near the alter, and all through the mass, as a little girl, I stared up at 'him' nailed to that cross and felt very sad. There is some good to
that I guess, but like santa clause, the easter bunny, and other fairy tales I believed as a little girl, I let childish things go when I grew up and realized, none
of it is true.

The crucifix wasn't used until 500AD. Jesus was portrayed as a lamb or nothing at all until that point. The lamb is far better than the dead sun god on some posts by a long shot.

I doubt horror movies would be as cool if catholic priests held up a lamb to fight the goat of Mendes

Inverted baby muttons on heavy metal album covers would look silly too.

Back in the days, a crucifix used to be pretty good defense against vampires. But now thanks to all the atheists and ''critical thinkers'' vampires don't believe in God anymore...

What's next? Vampires who like garlic? Genetically modified vampires who can survive solar radiation? I'm telling you, science and critical thinking will cause our downfall... It's just a question of time before we all become blood-sucking freaks...

Sitting at my laptop
So, who should we be worshipping God or Jesus?

Bill. He's the neighbour's kid who cuts the grass when I have to travel on business. Shovels the drive way when it snows and collects my mail so it doesn't pile up.

I slip him a hundred when I get home and hopefully he doesn't use it to buy rap music and cheap beer

Bill's kid is the best!!!
