Candidate or glamour: how do you vote?

With all this hype about cutting public funding for parties, I was just wondering how much cuts to parties would really affect the popular vote.

Personally, I find that I'm not influenced by fancy TV ads in the least. I usually just want to know the candidate's character and that's it. I couldn't care less if he's rich or poor, or even unemployed, as long as he has the character I beleive is needed to serve the community.

Inversely, an expensive suit, a fancy car, TV ads, etc. will not get my vote for a candidate if his character is found wanting. I don't care how handsome he is or how beautiful she is. I'd vote for a toothless man of character over such rifraff any day.

For those of you who oppose cuts to parties, are you really telling me that you vote for glitzy TV ads? If so, please don't vote 'cause this is a matter of public policy, not poopoolarity contests, as Chretien so eloquently put it.

I'm pretty much the same as you although I want to see signs that's he/she has been successful at something constructive. As far as I'm concerned all politicians lie, steal and cheat until they prove otherwise. I don't believe in political parties- their platforms are all the same - say whatever it takes to be elected and then do whatever it takes to stuff your pockets. Politics is mainly a matter of choosing the best of a bad lot. Generally speaking, I vote for who I think is the least detrimental candidate running in my riding.

Oh JLM, you're so optimistic:(

I'd rather vote for 'none of the above' than vote for the 'least detrimental'. And that's just what I did last election. Hopefully enough spoilt ballots will eventually get the message across.

Yeah, I tend to get that way when I see my taxes going down and employment going up. :p
