Toronto’s Rob Ford tops a long list of Canadian mayors in turmoil

Have you heard the one about the Canadian mayor facing conflict of interest allegations surrounding public money spent on a restaurant he owned? Or the one about the mayor charged by the RCMP with three criminal offenses who is fighting public pressure to retain his job?
How about the tale of the mayor who was swept out of office amid corruption allegations but claims his innocence? Or the other one, just like that?

Toronto

So was November just a bad month for mayors, or is this the tip of a much larger iceberg?
Tip of the iceberg I'd say. We have nearly zero accountability at any level of government in this country. Somethings got to change!

Dysfunction at Toronto City Hall is nothing new.
In June 2010, Rae held a retirement party at the Rosewater Club and billed the $12,000 cost to his office budget. Then Mayor David Miller said Rae was well within his right to us his office budget to fund his retirement party.

Apparently using City Stationary to raise money for underprivileged kids is way worse than the above.. To anyone who thinks this I would like to congratulate you. YOU ARE NOW A HARDCORE REPUBLICAN,

Rob Ford can

Looks like the city lawyer disagrees with Ford's interpretation of the ruling too.
TORONTO — An application seeking to stay the court-ordered ousting of Mayor Rob Ford from office will be heard early next month while the city's top lawyer said he could not run in any byelection if one is called to choose his successor.

City solicitor Anna Kinastowski told council that a judge's ruling booting Ford from office for the "current term" precludes that option.

"It is my opinion that that word 'term' means 2010 to 2014," Kinastowski said.

"That is our interpretation of that particular fact."

Unless you read it as.... the present term ends when he gets removed from office....then any election after that is a new term.

How so?

... tried to hide it...
He did?

RCS pointed out a valid example. There are a litany of others as well.

Ford is hardly Capone.

He had the highest voter rating post amalgamation, in the city's history.

Heaven help us all (at least in Toronto). Olivia Chow is rumored to want to run for mayor. If she is mayor we would just have another miller. Hang on to your wallets, taxes will go up...

Unfortunately, like most blind socialists, she hates cops too.

She was a disaster on the Police Services Board, as mayor she would be a nightmare of epic proportions.

It's possible.

Ford got a huge approval rating from the election results, dare I say mandate?

Unfortunately he handled the backlash from the left, poorly. It looks bad on his and his ilk's ability to lead.

I think it should look bad. At the end of the day a leader is not judged on his ability to lead those that agree with him but on leading those who are in opposition. Takes some skill and tact. Mind you, I do think that a lot of the noise made about him by the left, or whomever, was really ridiculous. But you still have to be able to handle that with a modicum of grace and dignity. Not two words I'd attribute to Ford.

Take Harper by comparison, some things I like about the man some I do not, just to get that out there. But Harper was feisty and aggressive on the campaign trail, all grr and argh, yet as PM he comes across as 'patient Dad', for the most part. I'm talking about demeanor here. Maybe it shouldn't make a difference but it does.

I think you need more than a radical 'let's right this ship' plan and a go get 'em attitude to be a leader, whether it's of a political party or a mayor. From where I sit, and I have no stake in this at all, I'm not sure that Ford does.

He did, he was bombarded with attacks from day one, and failed to deal with them professionally.

Rightly or wrongly his failure to deal with them properly is part of his problem. Again I think many of the attacks were ridiculous in nature, but then I think most political partisan posturing is ridiculous in nature irrespective of what 'side' it comes from.

It's the heart of his problem.

If you look closely at his tenure in office, he tried to give his constituents what they wanted, balanced with what was best for the city.

There's only one thing he loves more than football, and that's Toronto. It showed through all the time.

I respect that. Mean while I cringed every time I saw him bumble in front of the media, or bristle awkwardly against his detractors.

Again I think many of the attacks were ridiculous in nature, but then I think most political partisan posturing is ridiculous in nature irrespective of what 'side' it comes from.
Oh it most definitely was.

He handled a number of issues badly= The Judge nailed it with his sense of entitlements- then his brother saying it was all about helping kids. It was not-

He was guilty- could have avoided it- choose to be bullheaded and stubborn.
