That is why the whole story is so bizarre. Here is a woman, an academic, and she goes on a rampage. It seems so unlikely. And all this because she was refused tenure.

You seem to be quite perplexed, SirJP. Is that the fact that she's an assistant professor that bothers you so much, or the fact that she's a female?

Apart from the fact she is a woman and an assistant professor, maybe she went on a rampage because she's nuts.

The whole thing is bizarre, countryboy. You don't expect an academic to do this kind of thing (at least I wouldn't). Also, you wouldn't expect a woman to do it, hardly any of the people who go on shooting spree are women. Here we have a female academic, I would think the least likely of all demographics to go on a rampage.

It would be like a Trappist monk or a Quaker going on a shooting spree.

No doubt we have our share of incidents. However, if we look at statistics (I know you don’t believe in statistics), the incidence are far fewer in Canada compared to USA, even correcting for the smaller population.

Canada........lots of gun control...........murder rate 1.83 per 100,00

Israel.......every Jew armed.....................murder rate 1.87 per 100,00

China.........no private guns....................murder rate 2.36 per 100,000

Switzerland........everyone armed.........murder rate 2.26 per 100,00

USA .....lots of guns...................................murder rate 5.4 per 100,000

Jamaica...............no legal guns................murder rate 49.0 per 100,000

Inevitable conclusion??? There is NO correlation between murder rates and the availability of guns.

Now, FINALLY we are starting to get somewhere. The number of murders has very little to do with guns. There are a thousand reasons besides guns, just to identify a few, some main reasons would be the disposition of the people, issues inherent in the country, the laws and law enforcement protocol in the country.

News has now come out that she shot and killed her 18 year old brother 20 years ago, but it was an 'accident'.

Number of murders has everything to do with availability of guns. However, one has to compare like with the like. It is dishonest to throw in China and Jamaica into the mix, neither are developed countries. There can be many other factors which come into the picture in a country which is not developed. Poverty, dictatorship (government itself can do plenty of murders in a dictatorship), lack of civil rights, lack of proper law and order etc.

One must compare like with like, one must look at developed countries. So let us leave out China and Jamaica from the mix and look at it again.

Canada........lots of gun control...........murder rate 1.83 per 100,00

Israel.......every Jew armed.....................murder rate 1.87 per 100,00

Switzerland........everyone armed.........murder rate 2.26 per 100,00

Out of the four countries, Canada is the only one which has strict gun control and it has the lowest murder rate of the four.

Also, he has tried to cook the statistics by selectively picking the countries. Put in the other developed countries into the mix (Britain, France, Norway, Denmark or any developed country for that matter). They all have strict gun control and they have much lower murder rates than USA or Switzerland.

Moving the goal posts again are we? People live there don't they? People kill....

...but thanks for the lesson in how to manipulate statistics to make them say what you want them to say

Maybe one or two percent. There are many reasons to own a gun besides murdering people.

Maybe you can explain it to him better than I can. I've been trying for years, but it's like trying to penetrate 3' of solid reinforced concrete.:lol::lol:

Oh, I quite agree. Hardly anybody buys a gun with the intention of murdering somebody. At the same time, if a gun is available, in a moment of passion, if a gun is ready and available, chances are that it will be used.

Without a gun, it is much more difficult to kill somebody. Knife, strangling etc. are not as reliable, it takes longer, the victim may fight back etc. With a gun, a well aimed bullet (or even a poorly aimed one, as long as you hit the victim, chances are that the victim won’t be able to fight back and the second bullet will finish him off) and it is over.

You're the statistics guy.... Why not do a study on how many murders are committed and what weapon was used ... including fire and automobile.

Okay.......

Scotland: very very tough gun control.......murder rate 2.13 per 100,000
England: very, very tough gun control, and a systen that low balls murder rates, 1.37 per 100,000
Northern Ireland: very very tough gun control, murder rate 2.48 per 100,000
Norway: the largest ownership of firearms in northern Europe, moderate gun control, murder rate 0.71 per 100,000
Denmark.....very strict gun control, murder rate 0.88 per 100,000
France: Strict laws, murder rate 1.59 per 100,000

The last site is especially interesting..........compared with homicide rates, it makes an interesting chart......

The Swiss have more guns than most and their murder rate is 0.92 per 100,000. Anyone who says the ubiquitousness of guns leads to a higher murder rate is a fool.

Just to balance the thought, a well-aimed automobile can take out multiple victims with one "shot", and there is rarely a chance that the victim(s) can or will "return fire."

I think the "moment of passion" applies to automobiles too...isn't it called "road rage?"
