And the ROC would turn its money monarch side down. The British monarchy is not a unifying institution.

Are there any unifying institutions left in this country? Our successive governments from Trudeau on have all been divisive and kept eroding the fabric that binds the nation, to the point that not even our national sports teams enjoy full support from all regions, as Quebec feels left out/under represented/discriminated against in some cases (at least according to that pompous ass Denis Coderre and a number of other Quebec politicians).

The Monarchy is a fact and has been from day 1. The fact that quebecers don't like it is tough shyte. They should consider themselves lucky with what they were allowed to keep and enjoy after the Plains of Abraham. The English COULD have been real pricks about it and sent tham all packiing back to France and just annexed all their lands.

The Constitutional Act of 1791 guaranteeing language and religion, and dividing Canada into Upper and Lower Canada, was an expedient measure. Having just lost the 13 Colonies, the British were afraid Canada would be lost as well.

Not really. The British had their hands full with the American colonists at the time.

I don't see why there is such a fascination with royalty but to each his/her own.

I'm particularly fascinated neither with "royalty" nor tradition. However, a monarchy does have certain advantages over a republic, at least in principle if it is well planned, in terms of resisting mob rule and maintaining stability.

That said, there are various kinds of monarchy just as there are various kinds of republic. For example, the German president has duties more akin to those of the Queen of England than to those of the US President for example.

Is thinking things through your definition of lazy, Dumpy? I've repeatedly said I am not married to the idea that we must have a monarch but that I don't believe in change without benefit and challenged you to show me the goods... which you have steadfastly refused or been unable to do.

And yes the Monarchy, as it applies to Canadian politics IS a check on our democracy, perhaps moreso than the courts, who are also supposed to function in that role (in terms of interpreting the constitution validity of law), but whose members are APPOINTED by sitting gov'ts. Where the Monarchy is pretty much apolitical, the courts are made up of those who have at least made an effort to stay on the good side of their political masters. Or would you like to see us elect judges and senators as well?

And yes, keeping the Monarchy IS cheaper than replacing it would be. You can go back to watching Sesame Street now...

Dear Big Birdbrain:

Things pile up, the Senate is useless, the west is underrepresented, urban areas are underrepresented, PEI should be part of one province with NB/NS. Things need to change and improve and it doesn't look like the country is getting that. There is too much govt and the country is overgoverned. Everyone thought the euro was fine until it wasn't. Italy was no problem in early 2011.

The monarchy is as useful as the senate, it can be entirely bypassed and no one would notice. When you pay millions for something you don't need, it costs billions.

A good time to mention how "cheap' the monarchy is. We might win the Commonwealth Games bid one year, that fourth rate athletic competion with mostly third world countries. Security will cost billions. Real cheap. For sure.
