The US is the only "Western Democracy" that still retains the death penalty. Still behind Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran in total numbers of executions; never good to fall behind.

Japan's not a "Western democracy?" How 'bout Guatemala? Not Western or not a democracy?

There's others too, but I'll let you chew on those two a spell.

O jesus, I forgot Japan is a western country. And, that Guatamala is civilisation's standard.

Keep your list coming; send it on a drone.

Or, print the faces of their leaders on playing cards.

Those goalposts must be really heavy. But I guess moving them around is easier than abandoning your appeal to popularity. Logical fallacies are so addictive.

Good ideas. Red herrings, too. As I said, logical fallacies and all. . .

TB, you're supporting the unsupportable; mind you, execution is a capital idea. More executions should be public - prime time like shock and awe.

"Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Two out of three ain't bad.

No, Spade. You're supporting the insupportable. Here it is, in case you've conveniently forgotten:

"The US is the only "Western Democracy" that still retains the death penalty."

You wanna debate capital punishment? Be happy to. But not if you're going to support your argument with "facts" that are not true, and when called on it, shift the goalposts.

Playing whack-a-mole with lies and inaccuracies isn't debate. And I'm not going to chase you while you desperately throw red herrings in the hope I'll slip on one.

Well, we all know arguments against, such as the international law that prohibits the execution of the mentally ill. The US is a signatory. What percentage of those on America's death row are mentally ill?

I've tried "civilisation" but that you described as so passé.

Wow, let's catalog the flaws in that argument, shall we?

Which international law would that be? Here's Amnesty International's own list of the "international laws" that forbid capital punishment. Please note that the U.S. is signatory to none of them. Time to move the goalposts again.
Death Penalty: Ratification of international treaties | Amnesty International

Further, the U.S. doesn't execute the insane. That's unConstitutional under Ford v. Wainwright. And, unlike you, the Supreme Court provided a definition of "insane" in Ford. But don't let that stop you from asserting some other definition, mmm-kay? That's one logical fallacy you've missed so far.

I've tried "civilisation" but that you described as so passé.
Be interesting to see you quote where I've done so. Too bad you can't.

Here's an idea. Why don't you quote some eighteenth-century poetry from a man who talked about liberty and the pursuit of happiness while he raped his slave?

I guess our differences boil down to culture. I was raised to respect, by populace and state, the sanctity of life, Mind you, in North America today, that standard is a minority position.

Probably. I certainly don't consider life "sacred," whatever that means.

Next, look at executing the mentally retarded. Tajokistan, anyone?
Good idea. Seeing as how I exposed the falsity of your statement about the U.S. being signatory to "international law" that forbids executing the mentally ill, time to jump on a new horse.

I support the death penalty for rapists, murderers and politicians. I think we have wasted far too much time and effort trying to make it sterile though. The old fashioned firing squad or guillotine are still the best ways and we should stick with them.

You got to be careful, Nick- I don't believe ALL politicians deserve it, maybe just do one or two to start with and see how people like it. I think there are two types of murderers- those who are thoroughly evil bastards and those who are basically good and just blow up because perhaps they've "had enough". I'd be open to a suggestion that the ex sawmill employee in Nanaimo was one of the latter. That f**king pair in Ontario who raped and murdered the little girl, should have been expunged within 15 minutes of the completion of the trial. That is a prime example of where we should have capital punishment. But with all the weak spines in parliament we'll never see it. People like me could fill certain roles very efficiently.
