In Blow to Trump and Netanyahu, UN Rejects U.S. Recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's Capital

An overwhelming majority of 128 member states voted in favor of the resolution, with only 9 voting against and 35 abstaining; Netanyahu says Israel 'completely rejects preposterous' decision.

In a major diplomatic blow to Israel and U.S. President Donald Trump, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution rejecting the American recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, with 128 member states voting in favor of the resolution and a mere nine voting against it.

Among the countries that voted in favor of the resolution are India, Russia and China, all countries Netanyahu has touted as allies recently. However, some countries surprised Israel by breaking the consesus at the UN, such as Hungary, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Romania, Croatia and Poland.

"Israel completely rejects this preposterous resolution," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said minutes after the results were announced.

Lebanon will be destroyed in order to prevent Iran from having access to the Mediterranean to sell its oil as well.

Western NATO members will attempt to rule the world rather than the United Nations.

The West will not fund the United Nations. The United Nations building itself is ancient and the building infrastructure is not equipped with modern facilities and will need to be rebuilt. The new headquarters will be constructed in Shanghai China.

This was a completely avoidable embarrassment for the U.S.. There was no upside to recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital. It simply discredited the U.S. role as an honest broker in the peace process. It really did nothing to furthur Israeli security, or, diminish the national aspirations of the Palestinians.

Jerusalem will only be universally recognized as Israeli Capital when it is deemed to be an international city and capital of both the Palestine and Israel.

The only possible retaliation for Trump will be to withhold UN operating funds.. which was going to happen regardless.

Trump simply followed through on the Jerusalem Embassy Act which was passed by Congress in '95 calling for the relocation of the US embassy by 1999. The lack of motivation and will of past administrations and lack of intestinal fortitude of past leaders in following thorough on a congressional policy is stunning.

That said, I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the opinion that Israel has to be recognized as an international city. Is there any reason why relocating an embassy should prevent that from happening?
