Cardinal George Pell, the high ranking Vatican prelate who has been credited with restoring the Vatican's financial health.. and who has a reputation for blunt, no nonsence and ungarnished opinion has expressed reservations and cautions about Pope Francis' 'environmental' encyclical.. voicing openly what many others in the Church have been expressing privately.

Cardinal George Pell questions the Pope’s authority on climate changeÂ* | Daily Mail Online

Amongst the quotes of Card. Pell from the article is that "the Roman Catholic Church has No mandate to lay down doctrine on scientific matters."

"The Church has no particular expertise in science... or mandate to pronounce on scientific matters. We believe in the autonomy of science."

In 2006 he declared that "hysteric and extreme claims about AGW are a symptom of pagan emptiness".. and 2007 that "he was sceptical of the extravagent claims and motives of man-made climatic catastophes"

Pope Francis on this issue and others has fomented powerful countervailing reactions to views many find unfounded and irreconcilable to Church doctrine, its mandate and its patrimony.

The problem of Global Warmth is not exclusively man-made.
Yes there is certainly the man-made factor leading to the increased CO2 and other gases like the methane leading to the appearance of the greenhouse phenomenon.
But there is another factor which is

The distance of the earth from the sun has changed and the earth has become somewhat nearer to the sun than it had been before(several miles maybe.)

And it's flat. We know because a book written in the seventh century says so. Everybody knows that scientific knowledge was at its peak in seventh century Arabia.

I'm curious coldstream, Who is in charge, the cardinal or the Pope? Who is Christ's representative on earth? The Cardinal or the Pope?

The Cardinals in Rome elected Pope Francis with God's guidance. Or are you suggesting that God, through the Cardinals made a mistake with Pope Francis?

Whichever one best agrees with coldstream's politics and mopery. There's research that shows an increasing trend of people changing cults for political reasons.

How many of these mayors are experts on Earth's climate?

Thank God that Boris Johnson, the mayor of the world's greatest city, has more sense and doesn't believe all that global warming nonsense. He also refused to meet the Pope a few days ago and to even join these 50 mayors in their "climate change" discussion, saying he was "too busy."

London Mayor Boris Johnson 'too busy' to meet Pope Francis over climate change threat

Daily Mirror

The Pope has taken an outspoken stance on global warming and other leading politicians today attended the start of his conference on the subject

Low priority? Boris has committed to 60% reduction of London’s carbon emissions by 2025

Boris Johnson was today accused of “snubbing” the Pope as he failed to join 50 leading mayors and governors from around the world at a two-day climate change meeting in Rome.

The Mayor of London’s office confirmed that Mr Johnson was invited to attend the summit but added: “He is just really busy at the moment.”

Pope Francis has taken an outspoken stance on global warming and called a major two-day conference on tackling the problem which started today.

Leading politicians due to attend include New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, California Governor Jerry Brown and Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes, as well as mayors from Paris, Madrid, Johannesburg and Oslo.

But Mr Johnson, who is also the new MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip in west London, turned down the Papal offer in order to instead attend a City Hall panel on policing as well as carry out “various” House of Commons commitments, his office told the Mirror.

Baroness Jenny Jones, London Assembly member for the Green Party, said: “It’s a real shame that Boris couldn’t make time in his schedule to join mayors from around the world in meeting the Pope to discuss climate change.

“Cities like London must be part of the solution in the fight against climate change.

"Boris knows that that by truly investing in the fight against climate change he could significantly change London for the better – by reducing air pollution, creating jobs in clean tech and keeping homes warm - yet this snub suggests that his priorities lie elsewhere.

“Once again climate change seems to have slipped right down the Tories’ agenda.”

The Mayor has committed to a 60% reduction of London’s carbon emissions by 2025.

But he was recently criticised for rejecting a call from the London Assembly for City Hall’s £4.8bn London Pensions Fund Authority to move away from investments in fossil fuels.

City Hall, the headquarters of the Greater London Authority (GLA), which comprises the Mayor of London and the London Assembly

In 2013, Mr Johnson was accused of using his £275,000 a year column in the Daily Telegraph to express support for climate change sceptics.

He said he had an “open mind” on whether the UK was about to enter a “mini ice-age”, adding: “Something appears to be up with our winter weather, and to call it 'warming' is obviously to strain the language.”

A City Hall spokesperson later added: “The Mayor was unable to attend the Vatican’s events this week due to diary constraints.

“He is however delighted that the Vatican is highlighting the issues of climate change and modern slavery, and congratulates Pope Francis on his initiatives in this area.

“Addressing the challenge of climate change is one of the Mayor’s key priorities and he has led the world in city-based efforts to reduce emissions, including his announcement of an Ultra-Low Emissions Zone in central London to be introduced in 2020.”

The only UK mayors present at the conference today were Bristol mayor George Ferguson and Manchester mayor Tony Lloyd.

He continued, "That's why we never bothered Galileo or Copernicus. Nope, not one tiny little bit."

It's worth noting that Galileo got it wrong too. Placing the Sun and the centre of the universe, instead of an undistinguished star in the outskirts of a modest galaxy, that contains at least 200 billion other suns.. and itself is only one of a 100 billion galaxies in the visible universe.

So the god of science isn't as infallible as one would think. And a hysterical, paganistic and superstition laced psuedo-science like AGW.. promoted by fear mongering and filled with ulterior philosophical and political motives... well.. doesn't even get off the ground... much less out of the atmosphere.

It all should give you a sense, though, of the infinite scale of God, and petty and finite agendas of those who deny a natural order, purpose and destiny to his Creation.

Science isn't a belief system. It is a methodology of gathering and analysing data, nothing more. There is no "God" there, only the one generated by your own inner needs for it to the one.

Well that assertion has certainly gotten lost in AGW.. that has completely scuttled the Western scientific tradition of empirical and objective testing of hypotheses.. replaced with a spectral and boundless belief system, infused with a profound pessimism and antipathy to the human cause.

GK Chesterton, the early 20th Century social commentator, got it right.. (paraphrased) "those who decide to believe in Nothing.. end up in believing in Everything."

The Cardinals in Rome elected Pope Francis with God's guidance. Or are you suggesting that God, through the Cardinals made a mistake with Pope Francis?

The Pope is deemed to have authority (but only in a limited and strictly defined way, 'infallibility') in matters of faith and morals (as in the condemnation of the practice of homosexuality). He has no assumed expertise is the psuedo superstition of AGW.

As to the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the Conclave.. that is assumed to be the case. But the College of Cardinals have not always got it right. Alexander VI, the Borgia Pope, with his intrigues, mistresses, murders and orgies is a case in point. The Church after all is a human institution, and like all things human, subject to error and corruption.

To answer your question about Francis, I suspect there were far better candidates for the Papacy. But the Church itself over time has always corrected a wayward course and captain, and, through Divine intervention, remained true to its Patimony.. which was established by Christ.
