Virtually all the human and material capital of Iraq belongs to (mostly American) corporations, for the plunder and profit.
--------------pastafarian-----------------------
This is false and misleading for several reasons.
Thus, the U.S. corporations that have received billions of tax-payer dollars for reconstruction in Iraq could own every business, do all the work, and send all of their money home. Nothing need be reinvested in Iraq nor specifically designed to aid the Iraqi economy. In addition, the Bremer Orders are illegal under international law. They directly violate the international convention governing the behavior of occupying forces and the Hague regulations of 1907 (the companion to the 1949 Geneva conventions, both ratified by the United States). Indeed, in a leaked memo written on March 26, the British attorney general, Lord Goldsmith, warned Tony Blair that "the imposition of major structural economic reforms [in Iraq] would not be authorized by international law."
If all 100 orders are taken together, they set the overall legal framework for overriding foreign exploitation of Iraq’s domestic market. They cover almost all facets of the economy, including Iraq’s trading regime, the mandate of the Central Bank, and regulations governing trade union activities. Collectively, they lay down the foundations for the real US objective in Iraq, apart from keeping control of the oil supply, namely the imposition of a neoliberal capitalist economy controlled and run by US transnational corporations.
But what is remarkable about these laws is not only their overall degree of control, but their far-reaching application. Order 81, for example, has the status of binding law over “patent industrial design, undisclosed information, integrated circuits and plant variety” — a degree of detailed supervision normally associated with a Soviet command-and-control economy. While historically the Iraqi Constitution prohibited private ownership of biological resources, the new US-imposed patent law introduces a system of monopoly rights over seeds. This is virtually a takeover of Iraqi agriculture.
The rights granted to US plant breeding companies under this order include the exclusive right to produce, reproduce, sell, export, import and store the plant varieties covered by intellectual property right for the next 20-25 years. During this extended period nobody can plant or otherwise use plants, trees or vines without compensating the breeder.

"If you can't convince them, confuse them."
And it's working....at least on his own people

No, it's not.
First, the US is violating its army's own Law of Land Warfare, which states that "the occupant does not have the right of sale or unqualified use of [nommilitary] property."
Bremer has allowed formerly state-owned businesses to be sold off, without democratic consultation, to buyers of the Bush administration's choosing. In addition, the whole Iraqi economy has been re-tooled to allow Iraqis no say in the running of corporations in their country, no way to ensure health or environmental standards, no way to launch competitive ventures.

The implications of all 100 Bremer orders is frightening and Iraq is bound by them for 40 years, unless the Iraqis can free themselves from their conquerors.
It's theft, pure and simple. It is the main reason that Iraq was invaded in my opinion.

So what do you suppose would have happened had Saddam completely complied and it was proven for all the world that he had no WMD without the US invading?

Who do you think would have invaded Iraq first then?

No, you've got it wrong. The Americans DON'T own the house of Saud; that's the problem. Unfortunately, too many members of the house of Saud are supporters of bin Laden, so the US needs Iraqi oil as a counter to Saudi oil. To show the Saudi royals that if they decide to cater to bin Laden's crowd, then maybe their oil won't be needed.

Twila,
Saddam complied with all UN resolution. It is the US that insisted that he is not complying and have WMD. They wanted the OIL.
Iraqis mean NOTHING to the US.....never have

Hell, if we're going down that road, non-rich Americans mean nothing to the Bush administration..never have.
