At least it's going to be a European team that will drive Blackleaf crazy. I'm rooting for France now because Blackleaf hates the French and it will drive him super crazy if they win it all.

I'm gonna say this before I get bashed by Blackleaf.....I am disgusted with Sven and Wayne Rooney...Sven, an idiot could see 4-5-1 wasnt working and it was putting far too much pressure on the front man.....Wayne, I have nothing but contempt for the idiot, David Beckham got lampooned in the press in 98 for kicking out while on the ground. What this IDIOT did was even worse, to do it at all is an auto-red card I dont care who you are, BUT TO DO IT IN FRONT OF THE REFEREE!!!! YOU WEAK WILLED BUFFOON!!! I HOP EYOU ROT IN MAN U Reserves!!!.

England waited so long for him to return and he goes and does something like that, thanks wayne, shows what contempt you have for your country.

I do not blame Big Phil though, very clever of him, he obviously did his homework, England are rubbish at penalties, dont bother with the attack, let it run over, wind Rooney up till he does something silly, tactically I cannot fault the man, infact I admire Big Phillipe for the research he quite blaitently put into it, although I think Ronaldo's wind ups were a little bit OTT

It did come to something when your best penalty taker is Owen Hargreaves though...no offence, best of luck Portugal and I hope either them or Germany win it

Its interesting that something as universal as the World Cup is supposed to bring us all together but it just tears us apart.

Its a damn shame that England got knocked out.....I think they played the most consistently well of all of the teams (bar Australia of course :p) I think Sven made some damn stupid decisions that cost his team a place in the semis and maybe its a good thing that Steve McClaren is taking over.

And I do think that Rooney was a bit of an idiot to have a hissy fit right in front of the ref.....but I dont think there was a red card in it at all!!! Very harsh of the ref!! I just hope England has grown and matured since France 98 and dont end up blaming the poor fella for the country being knocked out. Football is about teamwork and sometimes we all need to be reminded of that. Even I know that Australia's loss wasnt completely due to Grosso being a wimpy bitch.....it was also due to the ref :p :p :p

I do have to add though that I am SOOOO happy that France knocked Brazil out of the competition!!! They did not deserve a place in the semis since they've been playing crap in all their games!

I was rooting for Australia of course, then England, then Switzy..........now I have to say

ALLEZ LES BLEUS!!!!

But really, I'll be happy whatever the end result, as long as the dirty cheating Italians dont take the Cup!!!!!!!

The Italian team is probably the worst at faking terrible injuries. Just a brush of contact and they drop like they were pole-axed. They writhe on the ground like they are dying and minutes later they are back up and running. This diving and play-acting is what is wrong with soccer these days and it will likely kill the sport.

Look on the bright side

By GLUM ONLINE REPORTER

GUTTED.

There’s no better word to describe the feeling of watching England’s finest crash out of a major tournament.

And it could have been so different…

But hey, we’ve lost before, right? And we got over it.

There’s loads of reasons to be cheerful, and YOUR Sun Online has come up with a list to put a smile back on your face.

And what’s more, we want YOU to add to our list – simply email us at yourviews@the-sun.co.uk and we’ll publish the best.

So here are our reasons to be cheerful:

* Let’s face it, England games are ALWAYS painful to watch, even when we’re winning.

* There’s no more Sven (and no more pointless press conferences, dull post-match interviews and England friendlies that are turned into ‘training games’).

* Talk of metatarsals is over… until the next tournament no doubt!

* At least we got further than the Aussies, the Dutch and the Spanish.

* There’s only two years till European Championships in 2008, and we’ve got the Olympics coming up in 2012 here in good old Blighty

* Don't be taking any stick from your mates Down Under, we are still the world champions at Rugby. And we hold the Ashes too. [[Unlike the Germans and Italians and most other Europeans, who only really follow football, the English have the advantage that if we fail in football we can then look for success with our national rugby union, rugby league and cricket teams]]

* The summer's here - forget the football, get outside and rustle up a BBQ with your mates.

* There's only 191 days until Christmas and, even better, only seven weeks until start of the football season – and we’ve got the most exciting league in the world!

* We've got the best WAGs, and they definitely won the WAG Cup!
And if you're sick of the WAGs, at least you won't have to see any more pictures of them!

* You can go to the pub and chat to mates now – normal service is resumed! And there's no more queuing at the bar, so get the beers in!

Reason to be cheerful: England are still the rugby union World Champions. Here is the then England's captain Martin Johnson lifting the World Cup in 2003. And it was extra special because we beat France in the Semi-Final and the then World Champions Australia in the Final. Hopefully, we'll also win the 2007 World Cup.

Reason to be cheerful: In 2005, the England (and Wales) cricket team beat Australia to win the Ashes for the first time since 1987. Here's captain Michael Vaughan lifting cricket's great prize.

Couldnt agree more Juan!

And CanadianItalian, I really hope you're not talking about me.......cos seriously, shut your mouth!! How I feel about football and about your team does not reflect at all who I am as a person and for you to say that I have no class is pathetic, nasty and completely un-called for.

This is a discussion about sport, not a place to attack members of this community that you've never met and dont know the first thing about. Why dont you do everyone a favour and grow up or get out of here, ok? We dont need this kind of nastiness on the forum.

Really show me once on when I have insulted or name call your team or even you. Even after you apoligize you come back with the same insult towards my hertiage and people and you expect me to sit idly by and allow this garbage I think not. You are correct I did not need to point out the not class comments because they stand out like a neon light in a dark dirty alley. If you want to "discuss" sports by all means if you want to insult then expect it back and the only person that I have gotten in the face of is yours because no one else in this discussion has been so insulting as you. If you don't like the team fine...drop the racial slurs.........princess...

the link on my last post didn;t show up I think so here it is again.
http://observer.guardian.co.uk.osm/story/0,6903,1072648,00.html

And for everone else, I apoligize for this crap but if the shoe was on the other foot and people keep using racial comments over and over again then I think you would all have the same reaction as I do. When some states that this is pulling us apart and that things are getting ugly and then in the same paragraph uses dirogatory (probably spelled it wrong) comments againest another country and its people.....isn't this a little mixed up????? I welcome all intelligent passionate comments but I will not stand racial slurs.

First, let me say that I am not a fan of Italian football. I think its dour and boring. That's a shame because Italy produces some of the finest technical players in the world. I also agree with the sentiment that the Italians dive more than average - but really no more so than other Latin sides.

Having said that, I love Italy. I've spent some time there. I was at Italia 1990. Its a fabulous country. Rome was one of the most interesting citites I have been to. I have never seen so many beautiful women as I did when I was in that country. The food was awesome and the ice cream was to die for. I loved Italy.

I appreciate your comment Toro. And I do also agree that they must curb the diving in football in order to preserve the game. Just like in hockey that they have now started to crack down on the diving I think that football will head that way and I personally look forward to the change.

Beckham quits as England captain after 6 years at the helm

David Beckham is standing down as England captain following the team's World Cup exit.

Beckham choked back tears as he delivered an emotional statement at a news conference at England's training headquarters near Baden-Baden in Germany.

He said he had "lived the dream'' but with a new manager (Englishman Steve McClaren) taking over it was time for a new captain. He wanted to continue playing for England, however.

Speaking in a faltering voice, the 31-year-old midfielder said it had been the "greatest honour of his career'' to captain his country and offered his support to the new England manager Steve McClaren and the new captain who has yet to be announced.

Beckham revealed that he had made the decision to stand down some time ago but had hoped to announce it under different circumstances.

"I hoped to make it on the back of a successful World Cup. Sadly, that wasn't to be,'' he said.

"This decision has been the most difficult of my career to date but after discussing it with my family and those close to me I feel the time is right.''

Beckham was given a round of applause by journalists as he left the news conference without taking questions.

Departing England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson said "sorry'' nine times during his final news conference.

The Swede used the word repeatedly as he apologised for England's exit from the World Cup in Germany.

He said losing the quarter-final to Portugal was "not good enough'' and England's performance in the penalty shoot-out had been "very poor".

Eriksson added: "We have to blame ourselves because I don't think we should be going home today. But that's life and we have to accept it. It will take a long time before you make it sink down.

"I'm sorry, I'm really sorry, for the team, for the squad and I'm sorry for all the England fans. They deserve something better.''

Eriksson refused to blame Wayne Rooney for being sent off in the game in Gelsenkirchen after apparently stamping on a Portuguese player.

"He is the golden boy of English football. Don't kill him, I beg you. you will need him,'' Eriksson said.

"He is a fantastic footballer. He has his temperament but I have no hard feelings against him at all.''

The hopes of millions of fans were shattered on Saturday as England lost to Portugal on penalties.

It meant England failed to progress to the semi-finals of the competition - instead Portugal will take on France, who beat Brazil 1-0, and Germany will play Italy.

The England players were clearly devastated by their loss, some of the team crying after Manchester United player Cristiano Ronaldo sealed their fate from the penalty spot with the last kick of the game.

England have been defeated on penalties several times in recent years. A distraught Rio Ferdinand said: "To lose on penalties again is sickening but the lads put a great effort in. It just wasn't to be.''

As many as 65,000 England fans descended on the Gelsenkirchen area for the game, some 30,000 of whom held tickets for the match.

They were equally distraught at the result of the game, which saw Rooney sent off with 30 minutes of normal time left on the clock for a senseless boot to the groin of Ricardo Carvalho. Beckham had to leave the pitch due to injury.

It's the Europeans who are the worst. Mainly those from Southern Europe, such as Portugal, Spain and Italy are bad at diving, but for some reason the Dutch are pretty good at it, too. Racism is also rife in Continental European football.

Thankfully, diving and racism have been almost completely wiped out in English football, except foreign divers who play in England.

Fact is, Beckham's performances in the world cup didnt warrant a place in the team, let alone him captaining it, the team were made up of too many individguals, like Leonardo the Brazillian said, England and Brazil were veery similar, both had teams that should have been in the final, but because of poor leadership, cliques and bad management neither did.

Sorry Blackleaf, but COME ON FRANCE win it!!!!....I'm not a turncoat honest, I just saw their performance and considering how old the team is, I thought they were amazing, COME ON HENRY!!!

Global verdict on the England game.

"At last we saw something of the true English fight and spirit. They had been mediocre and lacking guts but this performance made me forget all that."

Conrad Lanners, Christchurch Press (New Zealand)
-------------------------------------------------------------

"I'd have been proud if Brazil had played with so much character. You can't coach that, it is built into players and always built into English players."

Marcel Rizzo, Diario Lance (Brazil)
-------------------------------------------------------------

"Technically it was inferior to a lot of games here but had excitement, tension and two sides giving it their all. They call it guts in England, don't they?"

Steven Davis, Dallas Morning News (USA)
---------------------------------------------------------------

"We admire English football so much in Turkey and this is why. There's so much passion in the team, they never know when they are down or beaten."

Altan Tanrikulu, Hurryiet (Turkey)
