A southern Newfoundland woman has been sentenced to nine months of probation for stealing cash from sympathy cards left in a church.

Harbour Breton resident Geraldine Skinner, 46, was convicted in March of theft under $5,000.

She pleaded guilty on the charge, and admitted to taking money tucked inside sympathy cards left at a funeral at an Anglican church in the community.

At sentencing in provincial court in Harbour Breton on Thursday, Skinner was also given an absolute discharge.

The sad thing is many families I know of, use that money to help pay for the furneral... and this bugger comes along and steals it for herself....

I'd personally would rather her steal from a homeless person then the mourning families of lost loved ones.... although that's also kinda up there.

If she'd just written a cheque to the corpse and taken the money as change.....
