''Why won't Obama close Gitmo as he promised?''

When he tried to bring the trials to the mainland the right wingers objected. As always, liberals are intimidated by the right wing. That's no excuse or justification - only an explanation.

The prisoners there cannot be held in U.S. proper, someone even suggested using a abandoned federal prison, the people said no. Obama just made another promise he couldn't keep. Politicians rarely can keep their election promises. The old adage, "say anything to achieve your goal") He did and here we are today.

Leadership is part of being president. It's time for the passive man/child Obama to quit playing golf and start leading the country. Obama can start leading by keeping his promise to close Gitmo. Don't you care about the rights of the detainees?

Obama has issued an executive order claiming the right to keep some of those unfortunate detainees incarcerated even if there are no charges lodged against them. Why won't Obama and his AG Holder give that poor fellow Khalid Sheikh Mohammed a trial? Why? Why? Why?

Isn't Khalid Sheikh Mohammed the hero of the American Left? KSM struck a blow against American imperialism didn't he? That make him the ally of the American Left. Where are KSM's defenders on the American Left?

Exactly, It would contravene so many laws within the US to hold them without charges or a trial and rise many issues of constutionality, so they must be held somewhere that the US government can operate outside the law.

Before you came to this forum we discussed this subject and I expressly called for a fair trial for each.

In civilian court on American soil or before a military tribunal in Gitmo? There is a big difference.

Personally, I think the attempt to handle this detainee stuff through judicial mechanisms was misguided. There should have been a Declaration of War, and the detainees should have been treated as prisoners of war to be incarcerated until they die or the end of the war whichever came first.

These guys are going to be held indefinitely any way. It would have been better to treat them as POWs.

Gitmo. is the perfect place to keep them, climate is nice and is a secure prison where an escape is unlikable. The armed forces want it open.

''Do you see any potential negative consequences with civilian trials stateside?''

Anything is possible. But the USA's greatest foundation is the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. If those rights are diminished as they are being done today in Gitmo, then all we stand for as a nation of laws and principles are jeopardized.

You don't seem to understand, The U.S. Constitution is not an umbrella for everyone, only United States Citizens. Somehow liberals have decided that it covers everybody, you may be able to stretch that to include everyone on U.S. soil, well Gitmo is not on U.S. soil and the prisoners are not U.S. citizens.

No rights are guaranteed in the face of the huge and all powerful fedgov contemplated by the American leftists. Your rhetoric is noble, but you want to create Big Brother.
