So why Machjo, with Free Trade in complete control of the World Economy, with Monetarism (free trade and de-nationalization of currency and credit), are we in such a desperate and chaotic economic environment. With all the promises that were made to us about the great prosperity Free Trade would bring us, why are we by every measure becoming poorer. Look at the 1950's and 60's, prior to the onset of the radical free market paradigm in 1971 (with the rescinding the Bretton Woods Currency Agreement and subsequent Free Trade Agreements).

Can Canadian families afford and house, two cars, send their kids to college, provide for a secure retirement on ONE income as they could in the 50's. What is the condition of the Canadian family now... drowning in debt, struggling to meet mortgage payment, working on 'contract' with no pensions or benefits. There kids go to college and come out so inundated with debt, they have little prospect of buying a house or starting a family for years, a decade and more.

Our transportation and energy infrastructures are falling apart. What industries we have left are being taken over by Global interests. Our tax system has become increasingly regressive.. only one of the factors leading to the vast polarization of wealth, into the hands of the few associated with Global Trading interests, or high technology jobs that can employ at most 20% of labour force.

We've been lied to. The Free Market paradigm is an unmitigated disaster for all except those willing to gouge and exploit the labour of others.. like the banks, investment and trading houses.

So? Who are we borrowing from? Or is the deficit tapping into money we already have but didn't set aside for budget?

Most of what you're talking about here has little to nothing to do with free trade. How does free trade prevent the government from asking a higher price for crown resources? How does free trade prevent the government from introducing codetermination laws? How does free trade prevent the government from raising income tax and providing more funding for education?

Also, remember that free trade is somewhat asymmetrical right now in that you can sell goods across borders but can't seek work across borders.

While I see some relationship between free trade and these other issues you bring up, much of it appears to be a non-sequitur.

It has EVERYTHING to do with Free Trade, Machjo.

You continue to rely of the sophistry of the Free Market, which purposely obfuscates tge realationship.. of an impoverishment of our country.. and an explosion of all types of debt.. private and public.

Get out of the trees and take a gander at the forest.

I haven't heard any scuffles between Harper and his caucus other than the dumb social conservatives wanting a voice again.

Well, isn't that a scuffle?

Can you give an example? I've already given a concrete example of how the jobs created by free trade are not productive jobs. They are purely make-work jobs. How does that help the economy? Sure it creates jobs, but also burdens the economy unnecessarily. There are other ways of creating jobs without having to rely on make-work jobs.

Again, what would be the difference between protectionism at the national level and at the local level. Just the scale is different.

The cons will be more agressive on deficit alright. They will agressively increase our personal deficits while making their corporate supporters rich as hell.
