Why Stephen Crabb should be the new British Prime Minister....

Why my fellow Brexiteers should want Stephen Crabb as Britain's next Prime Minister

The Conservative leadership contest will not just determine the next leader of the party but also the next Prime Minister of our country. As someone who campaigned for the “Leave” side in the recent EU referendum, it has often been assumed that I would back a “Leaver” in the leadership race.

I am, however, backing Stephen Crabb to be our next Prime Minister.

Stephen Crabb has a proven track record of being a One Nation Conservative who can cut across communities with his message of social justice for all. Not just because he grew up on a council estate and was raised by his single mum or because he funded his way through university by working as a builder but also because during his six years in Government he has helped support some of the most disadvantaged communities in Britain. First in his role as Welsh Secretary and currently in the work he is doing to support those on welfare, as Work and Pensions Secretary.

When you listen to Stephen Crabb he talks about his vision for our country, a vision which sees hope and a way forward for those who feel left behind by the state, those who feel the economic recovery of this country has passed them by and those who, last week, voted to leave the EU because they have not felt the benefits of being in the European Union.

He has heard the messages of those who feel ignored and let down by politicians and not only does he get these issues but he has answers to their problems. As someone who grew up in similar circumstances to Stephen Crabb, his vision for our country is inspiring. This is a man who wants to do something and not just be someone.

His vision for the country is one of unity which after such a divisive EU referendum is much needed. Working with Sajid Javid, the Business Secretary, he wants to deliver the best deal for Britain while keeping to the promises made during the referendum. Although Stephen Crabb campaigned to remain in the EU, he is very clear that he wants to move away from people being judged as either for Leave or Remain and draw a line under the referendum and the divisions it has caused both in the party and in the country.

My reasons for supporting Stephen Crabb, in the leadership contest, are firstly based on his years in Government where he has seen first-hand the pressures a Prime Minster faces and the tough decisions that need to be made. But my reasons can also be summed up in his own words in his article in the Telegraph where he writes this week, “We simply must deliver what we promised in our manifesto. At its heart is building a strong economy that delivers opportunities, regardless of the circumstances of someone’s birth.

It is difficult choosing from many great candidates, in our party, our next Prime Minister. Some MPs and members will make their decision based on the recent referendum. Some MPs and members will want a safe pair of hands to steer us though these rocky times.

As for me, I want someone who will do more than this. Someone who has a long term vision for our country and its people, a vision that says we will reach out and help those left behind and return to being a country where it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from. Stephen Crabb has that vision.

New Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister: Who are the bookies backing?

Boris Johnson - 5/4
Theresa May - 11/8
Stephen Crabb - 7/1
Andrea Leadsom - 10/1
Liam Fox - 16/1
Jeremy Hunt - 25/1
Priti Patel - 40/1
Michael Gove - 50/1
George Osborne - 66/1

I thought Boris Johnson sounded pretty impressive in the immediate aftermath of Referendum Day.

Britain will need a someone with pathological self confidence, the thick skin of a Rhino, and the same forward charging, head butting attitude to blast through all the negativity and threats he'll have to deal with to push through the mechanics of an independent UK.

In essence, someone like Donald Trump. It's a job for someone with a vision and a streak of ruthless pragmatism. It's not a job for a neophyte.

“I have concluded that person cannot be me” says Boris Johnson ruling himself out of Conservative election race

It seems that the decision by Michael Gove - who stood alongside Johnson in the campaign to get Britain out of the EU - has led Boris to stand down as a contender. Gove is sort of standing on a "No Boris" platform. There are many Brexiters in the Tory Party who are concerned that the former London Mayor has gone cool on Brexit and that, therefore, he won't be suitable to be PM and that, with the diehard Brexiter Michael Gove now in the running to be PM, the votes of the Tory Brexiters will likely go to Gove instead of Johnson. Hence Johnson's decision this morning to rule himself out of contention.

It seems that Theresa May - who made a speech this morning in which she confirmed she is running for PM - and Gove are the two frontrunners. Poor Boris has been stabbed in the back by Gove, who campaigned for Brexit alongside Johnson during the referendum campaign. Theresa May also attacked Boris during her speech this morning.

Boris Johnson says he's received overtures from Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore since the EU referendum.

In a swipe at US president Barack Obama, he says the UK will lead from the front of the queue - the US president warned that the UK would be at the back of the queue for a trade deal with the US if it left the EU.

Boris Johnson, announcing he will not stand as Conservative leader, says: "Having consulted colleagues and in view of the circumstances of Parliament I have concluded that person cannot be me."

BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith says Michael Gove's decision to contest the Conservative Party leadership had led to Boris Johnson's decision not to take part.

He says it was an "et tu Michael?" moment.

Norman says Boris Johnson "who probably won the Brexit campaign", by giving it the leadership, the profile and the pizzazz "now recognises that he has become toxic to large swathes of the country".

Mr Johnson did not name who he believes should be Tory leader.

'Boris Johnson unnerved Brexit campaigners with newspaper article'

Boris Johnson's Daily Telegraph article had caused "a wobble" in the Brexit campaign, says BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith.

He says the piece seemed to suggest the former London mayor had gone cool on Brexit, which unnerved many pro-Leave campaigners.

Chris Grayling says Tory contest features a number of 'skilled, effective performers'

Commons leader Chris Grayling, who is backing Theresa May as Conservative leader, says the contest now features a "number of skilled, effective performers".

He says the Conservatives "are no longer Leavers, we are no longer Remainers", instead the government will carry through the will of the British people.

Mr Grayling says he is sure Boris Johnson will have a big role in the future.

Pressed on his team's commitment to reduce immigration, Mr Grayling says: "We will be working absolutely resolutely to bring it down." Asked if that's to the tens of thousands promised in the Conservative election manifesto, he says: "That's always been the will of this government."

Mrs May launched her campaign to become Prime Minister at the RUSI in central London this morning. The event was attended by supporters including Cabinet minister Chris Grayling, Justine Greening, and Falklands veteran Simon Weston

Theresa May has long been a eurosceptic. However, during the referendum campaign, she backed Cameron's Remain campaign, probably because she thought it will help her aspirations to be Prime Minister. Now she's edging towards euroscepticism again.

During her speech at RUSI in central London this morning in which she announced her bid to become PM, she announced she will set up a "ministry for Brexit" if she becomes PM.

May said that Britain now needs a "vision of a country that works not for a privileged few but for every one of us."

She said the Secretary of State of the new department to take Britain out of the EU will be an MP who campaigned for Leave - so that could likely be Michael Gove.

Mrs May used her speech to say that taking Britain out of the EU will require "significant expertise and a consistent approach."

She also said that there is no turning back on Brexit.

I'm surprised Boris Johnson pulled out, but i got the drift in some statements he's made in recent days that he wasn't completely committed to the process. Above all they need someone who's completely sold on it. I don't know the other candidates but i know they need a strong, tough (to the point of ruthlessness), committed patriot to take the reins.

In any case the genie is out of the bottle and there's no putting it back in. The reverberations within the EU will be profound, we haven't seen the start of it yet.. but i expect the unity of EU will start to crack under pressure from electorates.

Above all the UK has to be firm on the issue of the sovereignty of its borders.. that means for trade AND immigration. It can't capitulate to the status of subjugated state as in the case of Norway, submitting to EU dictates.

The UK has a lot of leverage to work with.. it's size, it's relationship with America, its oil, disharmony and distress within the EU. It should develop alliances with sovereign states like Norway to press the EU on privilege and independence.

I think the German Foreign Minister has just come out and said that the UK could get a deal which will allow it to trade with the EU and still be able to reduce immigration and control its borders. So there are some encouraging signs on that score.
