Really?
So our F18s are never flown on patrol missions? Ever?
You're suggesting that Canada doesn't need any air defense capability?
Bingo - that is exactly what I mean. So long as the US has 3000 plus fighter planes Canada's air force is superfluous. What we need is coastal patrol aircraft, transports, and helicopters for troop movement. For checking out the occasional "hijacked" aircraft as in the case of the one that landed in Vancouver a few months ago we don't need an entire fleet of multibillion-dollar fighter planes. Cheaper aircraft would do the job quite well.
What is really happening here is that the Canadian air force is making sure that the level of government money allotted to it remains high whether it is really needed or not. To patrol for "rogue" aircraft all that is needed is fighter planes that can outfly a passenger liner. Those that are being proposed are far beyond what is needed.
I know that given the impressive history of the RCAF some will not like what I say, but if you look at the history of the last forty years there have been few cases where the RCAF has really been needed, at least I cannot think of one. Perhaps you could help me out.
