That has become the way of Canadian politics from the municipal level on up, we don't elect new representatives as much as we fire the old ones. Who is going to govern takes second place to who was in power and how much we want to get rid of them. This makes for easy campaigning, all you have to do is make the other guy look bad. No need for bothersome old policy statements and platform planks and all that other rubbish, it just lands in the circular file the day after the election anyways.
For me this is an election of political philosophy, of right vs left. Socialism focuses on the collective good of all, capitalism is concerned with the bottom line of the individual. I guess it just depends on where your head is at, is it "me" or "us" ?

As long as your collective good requires cash to fund it, you might want to think long and hard about shooting the goose that lays the golden egg... And that is EXACTLY what the left political parties are promoting in the policies that seek to fleece the companies/individuals that are the actual engines of the economy and deliver the funds needed to apply to the collective good
The goose that lays the golden egg is a greedy SOB and is hording all the gold. It is not good for the greater good of society, it is a detriment.
I'm okay with considering one's ability to pay when deciding how much of the burden they should shoulder. You look at the two extreme ends of the scale, those who have nothing and those who have more than they need, there is room to improve the balance without causing undue hardship.
The problem is that Socialism's zeal for the 'collective good' always leads to the collective bad. So determined are they to force equality they rob society's most productive people of any inspiration or reason to be productive, or simply drive them away. To protect the 'greater good' Socialists bail out industries and subsidize them with ever greater money, money that has to come from something which could increase production and productivity.
Capitalism isn't concerned with the bottom line of the individual. It is concerned with society, and realizes that the well-being of society, given human nature, requires rewards to those who strive and succeed, and denies them to those who do not. It is an imperfect system, but it has lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty while Socialism had put them back into it.
